These are birds that scream in the middle of the night. They can be heard across vast distances calling to each other. They wake us up!

It's against the law to interfere with wildlife here. If a Limpkin sets up a home in your tree, you may suffer for weeks with the nighttime screaming.

I think it's the mating call. One time, for about ten minutes, my wife and I were watching our local Limpkin scream and then another landed sort of crashing into him. The two made friends and were pretty quiet.

If we're near water we hear loons at night, which is spooky but not annoying (went camping years ago in northern Minnesota with some college friends, one of whom was from Kansas. The loons started up after dark and this kid jumped up and yelled, "WHAT THE HELL WAS THAT??" We lol'd). These limpkin critters are as bad as peacocks.
