The DU Lounge
Related: Culture Forums, Support ForumsI announce with a seriously grieving heart that Jean Luc crossed the rainbow bridge this morning
We knew he had a heart murmur and the vet told me if he starts coughing regularly that I should bring him in, which he had been having short coughing fits a couple times a day for the past two weeks. But it took a week before they had an opening.
They had to I guess kinda forcibly lay him on his side for a chest xray at the vet and he basically went into respiratory failure. Drugs to make him pee didn't work. He spent his last hour on oxygen but he was still really struggling and the vet said 'it's time'. Mandy and I were with him when he passed giving him love and scritches.
I had NO idea he was in that bad of shape. It's super freaking heartbreaking, I loved this cat to pieces.
My sweet, handsome boy ...
Made it to 13 years, 4 months.

(63,437 posts)it's so hard to say goodbye. I lost two of my last four cats at about the same age (both to cancer), and even knowing that they are old cats, it's hard not to wish for at least a few more years. I wish you'd had more time with Jean Luc, but you gave him so much love in the years you had with him.
Sending hugs to you and Mandy. And I'm hoping you'll have comforting signs from Jean Luc, even though I know you don't believe in that sort of thing.

(5,891 posts)I have a sweet boy, Uncle Chico, a street stray I brought home 5 years ago who recently was diagnosed with a heart murmur. He seems to have very raspy breathing at times; I am going to take him to a specialist for a cardiogram, or sonogram I can't remember which.
He is probably 10. I love this kitty, and I understand your great loss of Jean Luc.
. So sorry to hear about your loss.

(10,324 posts)I dont know why losing a four-legged friend is so tough. And they dont usually let on that something is going on either. Just now, I watched one of our cats try to eat a yellowjacket - I think it got her but shes looking back at me all nonchalant like I meant to do that, ya know.
That's just the way the beasts that let us share our lives with them are. And it doesnt help they cant let us know in just so many words. Especially with cats.
He's a pretty boy. Again sorry.

(114,743 posts)so don't feel guilty about not rushing him in sooner. As long as they enjoy any part of their lives, they keep mum about health issues.
They just don't live long enough, no matter how old they are when they go.
You're going to hurt for a while, you've lost such a good friend. Just know you did your best with him with what you had to work with. It's not like he told you he was really sick because he didn't. Cats don't do that. They prefer to enjoy life until it's time.

(8,098 posts)May Bast bless his crossing, and may he joyfully greet you when the time is appropriate. I lost my very special friend to a medical crisis no one saw coming, as well, a year ago. There are nights when the lack of his presence curled in my arms is especially acute, even a year and month later. For such small creatures, the impact they make on our lives is huge. Wishing sweet memories for you, and may the soul ache be gentle with you.

(1,005 posts)We lost our 14 year old Cocker Spaniel girl due to a pulmonary embolism. Similarly she seemed healthy and then started coughing. Took her to the vet, got the diagnosis. Had the let her go. Such a sweet soul and even now several years later we still grieve when we think about her. At the proper time, maybe you'll find a new friend to love and care for.

(33,643 posts)I inherited him from my beloved aunt when she passed in 2021. She took care of a LOT of feral cats (at one point it was 17), but had a couple Burmese indoor cats she paid a lot of $$$ for. Bit of a splurge for her but she loved the breed and you didn't find 'em in shelters up by Yosemite, where she lived.
After she passed, he quickly became my favorite cat I've ever known ... and I've known a lot of kitties in my life
He was a little rocker dude (my aunt, who was retired, pretty much raised him on music) and seriously never cared how loud and rocking the tunes were going, he'd just chill, sleeping on my 15" subwoofer (seen in one of the pics above) while I worked all day listening to music
IOW, absolutely perfect cat for me. So sad I only got about 22 months with him after my aunt passed.

(760 posts)So hard when fur babies leave our family. You gave him a loving fur-ever home, he lacked for nothing. Yet it is still hard. There is no time table for grieving, I still grieve fur babies I lost 16, 41, 50+ years ago - they leave a hole that never heals. What lessens the grieving is the (dumped by cretins) fur babies who now have a loving, lacking for nothing fur-ever home.
