because the symbol "1 shoe" and the symbol "1 cone" have no equation to determine their values...

but, assuming that "1 shoe" and "1 cone" are 1/2 the value of "2 shoes", etc.

30 / 3 = 10 so the value of "2 shoes" is 10.

20 - 10 = 10 and 10 / 2 = 5 so the value of 1 person = 5.

13 - 5 = 8 and 8 / 2 is 4 so the value of 2 cones = 4.

The last equation is

5 + 5 x 2 or 15. Multiplication always takes precedence over addition.

So the answer is 15

My eyes are not as sharp as they used to be, so I missed that the person is holding 2 cones. Assuming we add those together BEFORE doing the rest of the equation,

5+ (5+4) x 2 = 23

so I would go with 23 and state that this puzzle is not clear as to how to evaluate symbols that have no prior definition.

Lapfrog is correct?

shoe = 10

boy = 5

cone + cone = 8

cone = 4

10 + (4 x 5) = 30

Edit to correct Lapfog not Lapfrog

Edit to add again:

I also missed the boy is holding 2 cones so:

10 + {(5 + 4 + 4) x 4} = 62

maybe

Why would we have 2 variables equal to 5. The options for the shoes are 9,1 8,2, 7,3, 6,4 and the opposite. As a consequence the Rt shoe at the bottom could be 1 or 2 or 3,4,6,7,8 or 9. The only thing it cant be is 5 that variable is already used so there is a group of answers....I think.

The numeral "7" is a symbol, and it represents the same amount, or number, whether written small or large. The shoes and cones are symbols that stand for a number. The number does not change if the symbol is displayed larger or smaller..

way outside the box ! Like it.

Like an average brained person, just assumed each sneaker - left or right was of equal value. But Ptah is right, sneaker on bottom is a hair bigger. Also just noticed the fish and chips cone in the final line is slanted in the wrong direction.

But, seriously doubt whoever came up with this would be thinking that much . Otherwise there'd be no generally accepted answer since you'd have variations ( size change guesses) and unknowable pieces (a different fish n chips of unknown value)

But if this were the case, you cannot solve the bottom equation, as a right shoe could be anything from zero to 10, zero and 10 being a possible combination. Following from this, the cone in the bottom equation is at a very different angle than any of the cones in the third equation.

To make the a single shoe, regardless of left or right, equal to 5, one pair of shoes in the first equation would have to be either two left shoes or two right shoes. In third equation, the cones would have to be distinct, not overlapping, and at the same angle, and the cone in the last equation would need to be at that same angle. This would remove any ambiguity and force the solution of the last equation.

PEDMAS dictates that everything on the little boy is added up first. The boy, two shoes and two fries adds up to 19. The next operation is to multiply by the fries. That is times 2. We are now at 38. The last operation is to add the shoe, which is 5, for a total of 43.

ProfessorGAC

(76,957 posts)
38. Try This
Mon Apr 10, 2023, 05:46 PM
Apr 2023

3 PAIRS of Shoes = 30. A Pair = 10. One Shoe = 5.
2 Empty Handed Boys plus a pair of shoes equal 20. 20 minus the shoes = 10. The boy is 5.
Four fries & an empty handed boy = 13. 13 - 5 = 8. Each fry = 2.
Order of operations says we do the multiplication first. So, a boy with 2 fries in his hands is 5 + 4 =9.
9 times the fries (2) = 18.
Add the single shoe and we get 18 + 5 = 23.

I wrote that last at the VA using my phone and no reading glasses.

Because I did not notice that there were pairs my shoddy math was way off and as a result the value for shoes and cones were two times what they should have been.

When this error is corrected and the equation redone, the corrected answer looks like 23.

Perhaps.
