I wanted to let her go outside and SAFELY enjoy some fresh air and sunshine.
She's been living inside since I found her nearly frozen to death on Christmas Eve.
I put the cat harness on her with some effort (she had never worn it before), a bit of growling, but she seemed to grudgingly accept it.
Took her out on front porch, she seemed ok, then another JACKASS who lives here decided he had to come out on the front porch to stick his nose in
She freaked out at the sight of him (normally she is ok with him), growled and bared teeth, and slipped right out of the harness, clearing the porch rail, and ran full speed for the woods.
Saw her twice in yard, first time she vomited and ran, second time I approached her with can of food, 6 feet away in briars, her pupils were as big as saucers, she listened to me for a minute, growled, and ran.
I've put food out for her, and even put some of her litter out around the porch so she can smell her way home
She seems to be staying near the house
I was planning on getting her spayed this month, should have done it immediately.
There were 4 other cats outside while I was searching for her.
She is not in heat.
It's going to get very cold tonight, and we have assholes gunning ATV's down our dirt road all night.
I feel like shit

(10,240 posts)Hopefully shell be willing to come home. My ex had a cat that escaped when she let it out in the fenced back yard. Of course a 6 ft fence is no real barrier. My son searched the neighborhood for several days. When they were about ready to give up he found her under the next door neighbors place about 50ft away. He seemed to be glad to be found but of course hadnt come when called.

(36,509 posts)When my husband stepped out to chase it off one of our cats got out & ran the stranger out of the yard & the followed. He didn't come back. We fretted all night, no kitty. The next morning when we pulled the curtain to the sliding back door open, our bush had grown a black tail. Kitty was sleeping under the bush, sure he was hidden.
Sending positive vibes out into the universe for you & your kitty!

(10,240 posts)The cat took off which wasnt unusual. I knew shed be broken hearted if the cat wasnt there when she got home. I was working about 120 miles away and I usually went down on Monday morning and came home Thursday night after staying down there all week, but for a week I came home every night hoping to find the carb finally just before she got back from her trip the cat came home. I was kind of pissed but mostly relieved. The cat pulled that kind of thing all the time but always came home sooner or later.

(23,739 posts)If you have a porch or deck or just somewhere close to the house where you can put her bed, maybe she'll come back to sleep there.
I really hope she realizes how safe and cared for she was and comes home.

(25,320 posts)her. After finally giving up, I went to cut some veggies in the yard. There she was looking out the window of my neighbor's shed. I got the key, had to listen to the man's lecture and got my cat.If there are sheds or garages near you, check them out. Best of luck.

(19,616 posts)To toys, she had lived outside as a stray for most of her life
What I will definitely bring is a towel to avoid getting my arm ripped off if I can pick her up.

(115,831 posts)pretty close to your house. Have you tried https://lnk.bio/pawboost or your local Nextdoor? I've seen a lot of pets reunited through these websites.
Many years ago our cat slipped out the back door one very cold day in January - it was below zero and there was snow on the ground which was so iced up that we couldn't follow his tracks. I was sure he had frozen to death, but almost a week later he appeared at the back door with a look like, "What's the problem? You got anything to eat?" He was really hungry and had dried leaves in his fur but was none the worse for his experience. Maybe he got stuck in someone's garage; we'll never know. He didn't want to go outside after that, though. Cats are great survivors. Look for her after dark, under porches and shrubbery. She'll turn up!

(6,562 posts)Many years ago I took in a little kitty who had gotten himself dumped on someone's property. He was so hungry, when he got some wet food he could eat, he couldn't stop talking about it. He was so funny, commenting on every bite. We had a great relationship. He was loving and sweet. He followed my older cat around and imitated him.
One day, he scooted out. I couldn't catch him. I knew where he was hiding in the yard, but he was scared and wouldn't come out to me. I left my back door propped open, and then my inside garage door, but shut the laundry door, in case something terrifying wandered inside.
In the morning, there he was sleeping inside the garage, in front of the window. Boy, was he glad to see me! Just like that very first time when I saved his furry butt! He was a terrific pet, loving and sweet, and I was lucky I got to know him. He didn't exactly make it out again, but I am not sure he even wanted to go out after that.
So, I'm thinking, in case your pet hasn't returned yet, maybe you could leave a door completely open for him. I think the open door would mean safety.
