'COVID is over'

Last edited Tue Apr 11, 2023, 03:08 PM - Edit history (2)

That’s what someone said to me when he saw my mask when I had an event this morning I covered as part of my job. I heard it from somebody else a week or two ago about COVID being over. I don’t say anything when they tell me this stuff.

I’ve never stopped masking indoors. The only times I don’t mask indoors are when I’m at my place, like I am right now, or if I’m by myself somewhere or maybe if I’m at over at a friend or family member.

I usually don’t mask outdoors, but having been under the weather for more than a week, I’ve masked when working outdoors to protect others and not get them sick.

It’s always been in my nature to march to the beat of my own drum, not being one to cave to societal pressure, and I’ll be holding firm, not saying anything to these people who comment me about wearing a mask.

I don’t comment on what you do or don’t do. You do you, I’ll do me.

Personally I wish med facilities had mask requirements all the time. An older man, unmasked, tried to get on the elevator with us & my husband held up his hand & said, "You can take the next one. It's not busy." The guy responded, "Go to hell you liberal freaks." JFC. You're in a medical facility! How about a little understanding that some people are sick & don't want to get sicker. My friend said her father who is being treated for cancer, got Covid a few months ago & still feels like shit.

and am a little surprised by two things: One, at retail outlets like grocery stores, I'm never the only one wearing a mask. No one has ever made a negative comment to me, and often we maskees exchange a look of cameraderie. The other surprising thing is how quickly some medical offices dropped the masking requirement. I go to lots of doctors, and the only one to maintain strict covid protocols--allowing only a couple of patients at a time in the waiting room, for instance--is my ophthalmologist.

FWIW I have no plans to stop wearing a mask anywhere inside when I'm away from home. We bought two HEPA-filtered air cleaners for the room we use most, and we are contemplating beginning to invite friends over, a couple at a time. I was surprised to learn that HEPA filters can filter covid and RSV viruses.

You apparently are attending events in a reportorial role, while I'm just a face (or half a face) in the crowd, so I'm sure you're going to continue to catch flak for being cautious and considerate of others. What are you anyway, woke or something?

I go to other places and actually am not the only person wearing a mask, though I’m probably the youngest.

My nearby doctor/counseling center no longer requires masks, even though it recently was.

I’m in a red state, so that doesn’t help. For what it’s worth, I don’t care what they think of me for wearing a mask, just don’t talk to me about it or ask me to stop.

to them, COVID is indeed "over"

the people who comment, tell them you were recently exposed to Covid then get REALLY CLOSE to them

Yes, I was my hands, still do elbow bumps instead of hand shakes. I don’t care if nobody else is doing it.

It’s probably not a good idea to write protest messages since many people in the area know who I am, but all I ask is people keep their comments to themselves.

I have only been to a bank (once) to get into my safe deposit box, and to the internment of my sister’s ashes, and the following reception.

I continue to mask, despite five vaccinations/boosters. My wife went her doctor yesterday, and was told she was smart for continuing to mask; they had three covid cases in the last week.

I had covid before the lockdown..was doing ok until I went into septic shock...then I wasn't ok..I've had "milder" covid twice since (vaccinated and three times boosted) and I don't want it again so the mask stays on whenever I leave home...

They got it from their preschool grandkids who got it from their father who gave it to their mother. It moved so quickly through the family that they are all still sick together! It sucks. The mom of the kids is pregnant! This, just happening over Easter.

She must have been the one I caught it from. You have to remove the mask to eat, drink and readjust during almost 10 hours of a transatlantic sardine can.
well, I caught it. There are few restrictions in place anymore. no masks necessary, no visa necessary, no testing necessary, and yes, I caught it for the 2nd time after she said that.
And when I go out again, I will still wear it.

Three years of doing that and three years of no Covid and not even a head cold. I know many who have had Covid, including some mask wearers (but I'm betting they were the most vigilant of mask wearers). Yeah, all survived, but at least one has symptoms of "long Covid."

I'm sure I'd recover as well, but who wants to be sick for a week or two or three?

Even though I'm part of a shrinking minority, I'm still putting on a KN95 mask. I've yet to hear any comments from naysayers, but I've spotted a person or two giving me the side-eye "Look at this kook" sort of look. To heck with them, I'm not breathing in your exhaled particles.

19. I still mask indoors everywhere.

In stores and most other public places, I'm just a (covered) face in the crowd. I rarely see masks in stores except at the supermarket, where I shop on their senior discount day.

At places where I go regularly and where people know me, like church, I occasionally get sideways glances. Nobody has criticized me for wearing a mask, but a few have tried to coax me into removing it to have a snack during the adult discussion hour prior to regular services. They aren't being critical. They wonder what's the big deal since most of them have had it, or are vaccinated, and there are meds like Paxlovid in case you do get infected.

They just don't get it that I have underlying conditions that mean I would get a severe case if infected. I might not even be able to take Paxlovid, depending on blood tests at the time. My NP has said that I would probably not survive a covid infection. I can't take any chances.

The only time I wear a mask outdoors is in summer at the farmer's market. The booths are very close to each other and form little pockets for looking at and buying produce so that people are crowded together, touching shoulder to should with only 6 to 8 inches between faces. I slip in and out of the booths as fast as possible, always wearing an N95.

I am still limiting visits to stores, and masking if I go.

A few years ago, after traitor was installed, and before Covid struck, there was a warehouse fire 20 miles from my town, and the wind blew the toxix air up to 30 or 40 miles from the fire. There was a limited shelter in place by the warehouse, but no evacuations. To this day, I don't think the owners of the building listed what they had in there.

I could see clouds of smoke off in the distance, and smell crappy air, so I masked. I was the only person I saw in my area who masked. It was best for me then, and best for me now.

Take care of yourself!

Nor do I intend to start. A great majority of them tell me that I don’t need to wear the mask, but ultimately it’s not up to them.

If I weren’t already convinced, covid would have removed any doubt for me that people are, as a group, lazy and selfish with no consideration for others if it means the least inconvenience for themselves.

Hence not wanting to do lockdown, wear a mask or take the vaccine. It’s not like we’re part of society or anything.
