(44,499 posts)...and vastly improves on the downer ending of the source book.
Can't go wrong with Field of Dreams when it comes to an emotional punch.
Little Big League (1994) is a whole lot of fun. A League of Their Own is a good watch, and Major League is good for some laughs.
But The Natural...gives me chills every time I watch it.
Cinematography was done by Caleb Deschanel, father of actresses Zoey and Emily. He also did cinematography for The Right Stuff, which is equally as stunning.
Perhaps the most unheralded "star" of The Natural was Buffalo's War Memorial Stadium, which perfectly mimics the feel of a 1930s era ballpark in all its dark, vast, hulking glory.

(26,856 posts)If I remember right (been decades) he hits one, and the ball hits the light stand up on the stadium roof. And you see him running round the bases as sparks from the shattered light rug fall around the bases.
Wonderful stuff!

(39,900 posts)It's a whole lot more than a mere documentary; it's a glimpse into what baseball would have, could have, should have been.
All that's left today are memories and 'Big League Chew'. Oh, and a left handed catchers glove destine for Cooperstown.

(82,849 posts)There are a couple of clips in the trailer of people waving brooms and some guy running on top of the dugout carrying a broom. That was Joe Garza, who would bring out the broom when the Mavericks were about to sweep a series. The opposing teams didn't like it. The umpires didn't like it. The league didn't like it. The fans loved it.

(39,900 posts)Not only was the first batch of Major League Chew cooked in his family kitchen, Todd Field went on to a successful career in the Hollywood 'Industry'.
Early life
Field was born in Pomona, California, where his family ran a poultry farm.[2] When Field turned two, his family moved to Portland, Oregon, where his father went to work as a salesman, and his mother became a school librarian. At an early age, he became interested in performing sleight-of-hand and later music.
As a child in Portland, Field was a batboy for the Portland Mavericks, a single A independent minor league baseball team owned by Hollywood actor Bing Russell. Kurt Russell, Bing's son and later an actor in his own right, also played for the Portland Mavericks during this time. Field and Mavericks pitching coach Rob Nelson created the first batch of Big League Chew in the Field family kitchen. In 1980, Nelson and former New York Yankees all-star Jim Bouton sold the idea to the Wrigley Company. Since that time more than a billion pouches have been sold worldwide.
