(25,355 posts)when she first started her work with chimps. Such patience and perception, not to mention courage. It was amazing to me that she stayed alone in a jungle, waiting to observe the chimps and then had the courage to interact with those large, powerful animals in the wild. Not for the faint hearted.
I saw her speak at Mackey Auditorium on the University of Colorado campus in the 80s.
Grace, intelligence, wit, charm, modesty... and her full throated renditions of a variety of chimpanzee vocalizations were wonderful.

(25,355 posts)National Geographic film of Jane at work with the chimps at Gombe. Of course she was not actually alone in the film since the photographer and crew were there, but when they were not there to film her, she walked alone through the African forest and open fields. For a while, she slept alone in a hut in the open. And she walked around barefoot sometimes.
All I could think about were insects, snakes, lions, and other wild cats. I could not have done it.
But, when I was a child, I did get wild rabbits and birds in our yard to eat from my hands. Took a lot of patience and determination, but it worked. No lions or snakes, of course.
