I have admired Kareem Abdul Jabar for many years. At first it was for a silly reason. I was taller than the majority of boys in my class for a few years in primary school and got mocked out by them because of it. So when I first saw Kareem, and how tall he was, my child mind went, "Hey he proves being tall is cool, and look he hardly even has to jump to make the basket."
As the years went on I admired him for his incredible talent as an athlete, his friendship with Magic Johnson, and his comeback from a major financial setback! I also understand he wrote a few successful mystery novels.
Now I admire him even more. I have seen some recent news stories on him that really impressed me. First of all he is auctioning off a lot of his championship memorabilia to help raise funds for underprivileged children, and second he is publicly calling out Elon Musk for his hypocrisy, ignorance, and dangerous spreading of conspiracy theories.

(33,380 posts)Watching a basketball game sometime in the '80s, I said, "Hey, he's got a hook shot like Lew Alcindor!", to which my then-young son said, "That's because he was Alcindor before he changed his name to Kareem Abdul-Jabar."
I'm lousy with names.

(145,427 posts)My youngest child and I were in the main room and I saw Kareem coming in to the room before I saw Congressman John Lewis. It was a great seminar and it was nice to see Kareem and John Lewis talk about civil rights.
