That was back when it first came out, and I was 15 years old.

(4,858 posts)...but it haunted the character for years. Marvel actually used a "gray Hulk" in the 80s at one point...

(14,923 posts)Did you ever read "Off On Comet"?
It had very cool drawn clouds, skyscapes.
usonian
(9,842 posts)But weren't they all fun artwork?
electric_blue68
(14,923 posts)clouds, skyscapes were particularly appealing to me.

(9,842 posts)My Dad was an artist, but when he was not at work, he concentrated on portraits, landscapes and flowers, maybe some still lifes. (My brother holds the collection. I'm in a wildfire zone right now).
Nothing "comic". Not his style.
I picked up the landscapes and flowers part, but behind a camera.

(14,923 posts)We here in the NYC Tri-State even had special weather alerts for 2 days earlier (today lower temps now, and some rain over night) where we had 90° but like ?19% humidity!
I'm not sure I've ever heard of 19% humidity in our part of the country. So fire hazard!
Ultra liw humidity: AZ, NM, UT, NV, part CA sure, been to AZ & NM.

(9,842 posts)We just had two monster storms. The first was mostly wind and rain. The second was all of the above plus a couple of feet of snow. (yeah, big deal. I grew up in MA with 12 foot drifts). I stayed at my daughter's home in the bay area for the second. Big trees were knocked over there, and of course, in the foothills. I've been checking things out. No major tree losses on my property except that some old ones blocked the driveway and a neighbor was kind enough to clear the driveway. I'll have the rest cut up, since they are an eyesore. (it's a 7 acre lot, so ask me about trees!)
One tree that fell was really beautiful, but at least, I got pictures of it before it fell. It was a few feet into the neighboring property. I actually cleared brush around it in the past months to make it stand out.
But the main problem is fire and of course, smoke. Summer humidity is very low, and it's low most of the winter. Dry summers in most of CA are wonderful compared to my experience growing up. But they have a downside. While I live on a ridge that's clear of trees for 30 feet, and sparse beyond that, I didn't want to risk fire or smoke damage, and smoke comes from miles away. That's why I had n95 masks before covid even hit.
Next move, I'll set up a little gallery for some of Dad's paintings and some of my photos!
I upgraded cameras last year, so I've been posting photos here. Might be time to release another few.

(14,923 posts)I remember (though I can't place it time wise '18, '19, '20 ?) those massive fires out west that turned certain areas' day skies orange, and red. I saw the photos on FB.
One of the most startling was a photo from a jet where you looked down on a parade of altocumulus clouds BUT below them the color was red-orange! Unbelievable!
And I heard CA finally got some drenching storms.

(9,842 posts)I'll post some. Mostly manzanita here (they are so beautiful) if they inspire you and other artists. The trunks are dark red, and the red is mixed with other colors. At sunset, they just glow. Fortunately, I have hundreds here.
And the branches take amazing shapes.
electric_blue68
(14,923 posts)showing the other colors. 👍
The sounds familiar.
usonian
(9,842 posts)This is the trunk of a big manzanita tree. Taken in the afternoon, hence the emphasized texture and warm color. Manzanitas just glow in the late sun.
Taken earlier in the day, around 2.
Very twisted branches.
I do very little post-processing.

I'm going there in the next week, or two. I'll try and remember to take a photo, and post it.
Now that you've shown me a picture(s), yeah, I have seen photos of this type of tree. 🙂

(9,188 posts)featuring the Legion of Super Heroes, and Our Army at War, with Sargeant Rock. Does anyone know why he carried a .45 ACP Thompson sub machine gun, but always had .50 BMG belts draped over his chest?

(17,209 posts)... because the artists didn't know what they were doing?

(9,188 posts)But a belt of .50 BMG weighed 36 pounds. Nobody hauls around that much totally useless weight, let alone in combat.
I think your explanation makes more sense.

(14,923 posts)Betty is a great sewer.
She starts copying Veronica's outfit. If either Archie, or Jughead are with Betty & Veronica and Veronica walks away Betty starts talking to herself about fabric, bias cut, hemline etc. Archie, and Jughead begin to wonder about her (Betty), but they also comment on how Betty is showing the next day with Veronica's same outfit.
At one point Betty shows up with yet another copy, Veronica is now banging her head against a tree. ________ says to Archie or Jughead what's going on with Veronica? Betty is there and says (I think looking or blowing at her nails - visual trope of ? satisfied victory); "It's sort of a testimont to my skill with a needle.".
Veronica bursts home into her mansion's living room where her dad is sitting, now wondering what's going on,
Veronica yells something Iike, "I hate stupid paupers who are good with a sewing machine!".
She starts pouring through Fashion magazines in a pile telling her dad - I'll show her, picks up the latest issue showing a new fancy ?jumpsuit on the cover by a very famous designer. She shows the cover to her dad.
It's supposed to be shown at x show but she wants her dad to go and buy it from him."She'll never be able to copy this without a pattern!...", etc
Anyway... in comes Betty wearing that very same outfit!
Veronica is now throwing a crying fit on a couch. Betty says to Veronica's dad - something like "....I guess she's crying because she's happy I'm not copying her outfits anymore. I found this on the cover of a magazine.".
While Veronica's dad is sort of looking on like 'hooo, boy!'.
Baaaahahahahaaaaaaaaaa! 😄😄 😂
I don't like consistently snobby people
(and my mom was a superb sewer, trained a dressmaker)

(4,858 posts)...in more or less that order at the time, 1963-66, the golden age of Lee and Kirby and Ditko. To be a kid and a comics fan then was very exciting--every month you'd see something no one had ever done before...

(17,209 posts)My favorites were Adventure comics with the Legion of Superheroes (the original), which I understand has gone through a number of retcons and re-inventions since the early 60's. I have some hardback compilations of them now, for nostalgia's sake.
I also bought just about every addition of the various Archie properties (they had about ten different mags).
Mostly didn't care for super-heroes, except the Legion. And of course, never even touched a Marvel product in those days.
Sgt. Rock and GI Combat were the others I bought religiously. Had to have the war fix!
Fortunately, since soft drink bottles had deposits in those days of yore, a few hour's work could buy whatever mag caught my eye.
