(416 posts)I have all my own Grandfather's model Trains that are about 70 yrs old now...I hold onto them because I remember playing down in the "cellar" while he worked on them....

(23,694 posts)to them. Do your kids play with them? I hope so that is a great legacy.
We miss our old house in Evansville which had an awesome basement. There was a huge room under our 30' wide porch that was going to be the train room.

(416 posts)But his platform was huge and he perfected it for decades. It was the size of an entire piece of plywood, with 2 whole different train routes and an entire city
I even have the hand made models like the Water tower he put together...definitely holding onto them...such good memories.

Herbie on the road.
I wonder what that grey cylinder is on the third car- it kind of looks like the Trinity site bomb.

(13,003 posts)that was my exact thought.......................
My other thought was, could you imagine trying to get thru customs, or the carryon X-ray machine with this in order to fly it anywhere??
Customs would tear this entire beautiful masterpiece apart..................

(30,518 posts)It's lovely. I love model trains, but I've never seen this set-up. He did a great job.

While he has almost all scales, he is concentrating on the European made Marklin's.

(26,856 posts)It's got 2 levels! A little track swerve. A bridge. A tunnel.
packs a lot in. I thought the rocks were real.
My dad loved trains and model train set ups. I loved them as dioramas with different track set ups.
The had to have more than just one circle, or oval for me. The more complex the merrier! So levels, swerves, criss cross, bridges, tunnels, etc! 😄

(150 posts)My last train layout which used a seashore town as the setting was 6 X 15 feet. Here's a video of part of it from 2015:
After a remodeling project is finished later this year, I plan to build a 7 X 21 foot layout in the basement of our "forever home".
