The three small triangles near the upper vertex, two more triangles by merging the adjacent ones, and then the largest one by merging them all. That's 6.

Then the process can be repeated using the same upper vertex and the two lower horizontal lines. That's 12 more, for a total of 18.

I'm probably overlooking something, though.
