How many people have had wisdom teeth versus those who never had them?

I never got any wisdom teeth (my excuse for foolish mistakes). My dentist told me that the evolutionary trend is to not have wisdom teeth. They are a "dying" feature of human anatomy, according to him.

5. Only 3 of them came in.

I had to have 2 bottom wisdom teeth removed due to having short roots and I could move them with my tongue.


My right top wisdom tooth had to be extracted due to a cavity. I didn't need it, so it wasn't missed.


My top left never came in.

I'd lost three back molars by my mid-thirties though, giving my wisdom teeth some room to move.

7. Had all 4 taken out at once when I was 30. It wasn't THAT bad.

The dentist only wanted to do one side at a time. He also didn't want to let me take them home. I had plans to make some weird art with them before deciding that was too creepy. They're still rattling around in the house here someplace, looking for a purpose. Any ideas?

Some wisdom teeth may become impacted because there isn't enough room in the jaw to break through. I had mine removed, not because they were causing a problem, but I think at the time it was the general approach and my dentist advised I should have them remove BEFORE they caused a problem.

11. It's genetic. Some people never get wisdom teeth.

It's not a case of them just not erupting. Some people - I'm one of them - never had any 3rd set of molars to erupt.

Among the indigenous people of Mexico, 100% of them do not get wisdom teeth. The lack of wisdom teeth is more common in Asia and among indigenous people of the Americas. It's due to the PAX9 gene.

17. Never had them

One of my kids had them but the other only had 2. I blame Dh.

I also had four baby teeth that didn’t come out because there were no adult teeth underneath. They loosened up substantially when I became pregnant with my oldest.

9. I not only had wisdom teeth, but I still have 2 teeth in the roof of my mouth above my front teeth

which will never come in, but they are there. They have casued many a sinus infection over the years. I have no idea why I was blessed with them but it is what it is.

10. Cut Out Long Ago

I was 25 or so. Was having recurring infections that was affecting my singing voice.
Three were impacted. One came out 1-2-3.
The other 3 took over 2 hours. Of course, I was out under the full anesthesia.
The actually had to unhook my jaw to get the bottom left out. Hurt like heck for 3 days.
By a week (stitches removed), it was nothing.
No real regrets because the throat problems went away.
Perhaps my only possible regret was waiting too long and letting my bottom front teeth get pushed around.

no room in my mouth for them. The dentist gave me novocaine and just yanked them but it was an ordeal because two had hooked roots. But he gave me a great deal on the bill because I paid up front all at once so I didn't complain too much.

They serve a purpose - my husband lost four of his back molars when he was young - no dental care and they were rotten and had to be pulled. His wisdom teeth came in and filled in the gap.

18. My dentist told me that my wisdom teeth are there and that I could still get them

So one finally came in back in November, but it got infected and was quite painful, so I had to have it extracted.
