(71,887 posts)... in butter with some nice non-hormoned, non-atibiotic dosed calves liver to a light medium and boy howdy, you something good to eat.

(10,104 posts)Grandma forced Mom to eat it and she hated it, so she never made it for us, which continued with my family.

(8,514 posts).....to NOT eat it. My vote goes to "yuck".
Of course, being a vegetarian for close to 30 years, it's not something I'd consume even if it didn't smell very, very bad.

(29,709 posts)I have to be in a certain mood for liver & onions, and Im just not feeling it. BTW, the last time I had liver & onions, I nearly asphyxiated all the coworkers in my immediate vicinity. It ranked worse than the time Joyce heated up tuna in the microwave.

(29,709 posts)Since I was the perpetrator, I knew the location of Ground Zero. I deftly hop-skipped to a safe location on the periphery and hilarity ensued. People came to a dead halt, as if theyd hit a wall. The effluvia was so scattered by the time I returned to my desk that no culprit could be identified. With certainty. I was the subject of side-eye conversations on the subject, Im sure. Lets just say my reputation proceeded me.

(3,919 posts)and usually partook of their blue plate specials. I often selected the acquired taste of liver and onions.
Years later I was the boss of a 10 office company that sold and serviced computers, copiers etc.
I was always on the lookout for quality managers and needed to fill a slot in Ft. Myers.
The owner of my company had a friend from Atlanta who was now living in Cape Coral. I had to interview him.
Our luncheon, you can always learn something about someone at a good restaurant, was at Cafe l'Europe at St. Armand's Circle in Sarasota.
On the menu was calve's liver and onions.
He, of course, eschewed the liver and chose the chicken. He was flabbergasted that I ordered the liver and onions.
He wondered about working for someone who eats liver.
I told him about my diner experiences and remarked that if you wanted to have excellent liver and onions, this would be the place.
We both learned something about each other.
By the way, the liver and onions was the best I ever ate.

(29,363 posts)My mom used to serve liver, occasionally, even tho she didnt like it, because it was supposed to good for you.
One time, she told us it was fish, which we did like. All the tartar sauce or ketchup n the world could not mask the disgusting taste.

(76,653 posts)I ordered this voluntarily when my parents took me to a restaurant. The servers always asked "You sure?"
My mom hated it, so she'd never insist I eat it. Strictly my idea as an 8 or 9 year old.

(26,845 posts)...when one of my beloved older cousins invited us (I was ?12+) for a special Greek Easter meal. My mom's side is Greek American, and somewhat large.
Welp, that included magristsa - Special Greek Easter Soup containing...
Tadaaaa!
Hearts & kidneys! 😳🙁☹️ *whimper*
But like a good trooper I ate them bc I love my cousin. My mom and her were very close. It was her first cooked meal for us. The rest was probably very good, as I'd been eating various other Greek foods for much of my then quite young life.
The possible second time was ?30+ years later for Greek Easter: same cousin 😄 but totally different location. IF that happened I ate the soup but not the organs.
Different cuisine - either Puerto Rican, or Dominican.
I also learned to be very careful when (pronouncing) ordering moFungo - plantains with garlic cooked a certain way usually with something else - chorizo, roadyed pork, shrimp etc. I love that.
However, ordering moDungo - would get me cow's tripe! Eeeeps! 😩
Luckily, mistakes were Not made! 😁👍

(1,576 posts)I began my apprenticeship as a chef and executive chef had liver as a special for the day.
When I commented on how liver was so dry and disgusting he told me that it was because my Mom over-cooked it. He quickly sauteed a slice to medium rare, made me taste it and instantly I loved liver.

(493 posts)would always order liver and onions, even in places like Denny's, or what he called greasy spoon cafes. This was from the 1970s, forward, in California. He was a good guy, loved liver and onions, thanks for the memory, though I don't recall he ever having it being served with gravy. I can remember my mom, once, trying to cook it when I was 4 or so. It was awful, I just remember fussing about having to eat it.
So Yum for my fil Fred and Yuck for me.
