A ? for DU statisticians,/maths ppl/computer nerds

The code to open my phone is 12 digits, since these numbers are impt to me only, how hard is it to crack my phone open?

I was crap in higher maths,
(Each website/app I have has different passwords with alphanumeric variance- stored on a 3x5 card in my recipe file in case of emergency reboot.)

Thx

However, I would peer into that dented green metal recipe file to the left of your cooktop, to locate your passcodes.

I utilize the touchpad numbers on my mobile phone associated with my nickname to develop my passcodes, then...

I store my passcodes scribbled upon a full sheet of white paper carefully sporked directly on top of my desktop computer (in plain sight) so that I can find them when I need them...of course.

Take something familiar, like your kids name, pets name, anything you are bound to remember.. And spell it backwards. So Paula would be Aluap. Then add a number that is also familiar like your old house number, phone number or something like that and stick the two together.. So the password for Paula would be Aluap56, or flip the numbers.. Aluap65. Easy to remember and made of enough gibberish to make it difficult.. I have used this for years and it works for me..!

That assumes that you are using the digits 0 through 9 and that the intruder is required to enter 12 digits. If a shorter code can also be entered then there would be 1,111,111,111,111 possible combinations.

But what about if the phone accepts the proper code as soon as it's typed in, automatically ... no matter how many digits?

Tell me that one and I'll be super-impressed with your math skills

10^11 +
10^10
etc. +
10^1

^ = to the power of

IOWs, number of possibilities equals one trillion plus one hundred billion plus ten billion plus one billion plus one hundred million etc etc.
plus 10.

So, I think your answer is almost correct - just change the last 1 to a 0.

A number that is 12 digits long has 999,999,999,999 + 1 possible combinations.
That makes it 0ne in a trillion - 1,000,000,000,000
The extra 1 is for a combination of 000,000,000,000

Short version (for iphone)

An alphanumeric keyboard should pop up.
More here.
https://9to5mac.com/2019/05/01/custom-alphanumeric-passcode-iphone/

I have been using touch-id. (older phone)
There have been articles recently about people "shoulder-surfing" when people make purchases with their phones, memprozomg pt recording the code, stealing the phone and then locking the (former) owner out of their accounts.

Two or three times now, when I have used touch-id in a store, the phone decided to ask me for the passcode instead, as it does now and then for unknown reasons.

Security is tough!
Android may vary.

However the infamous GrayKey box is said to bypass the (increasing) time delays. This article is about as clear as the matter can get, give or take more recent info.

https://appleinsider.com/articles/18/04/17/researcher-estimates-graykey-can-unlock-a-6-digit-iphone-passcode-in-11-hours-heres-how-to-protect-yourself

Erase Data
iOS presents the option to Erase Data, which wipes an iPhone or iPad after ten failed attempts. Enabling Erase Data might not protect against GrayKey intrusions, as the tool's mechanics are thought to bypass the token-based functionality. For common brute force attacks, however, we recommend switching this function on if your device contains sensitive information.

There's the story of a child who punched in so many wrong passcodes that .... well, you get the idea.

Mom probably had to reset the phone and restore it from a backup.

My G-Ma gave me her manual type written recipe box in 1975 when I went to college.

There is probably 3000+ cards now. Some of which I have made.
If there is a tornado, the cats, me, the go bag & the recipe box are in the basement under the stairs. I already got a case of water, clif bars, a flashlight, sleeping bag and battery radio down there.

Yes I was a Girl Scout

All of those things affect your pool of possibilities. Let's just say you used all those things.

Upper and lower cas letters = 52

Numerical digits = 10 (0 thru 9)

Let's say there are 10 special characters possible = 10

Total possibilities for each of 12 spots? 82

Total possible combinations? 82 to the 12th power
