Ibuprofen -- 400 mg 4 times a day for 4 days usually knocks it out. (Don't take this level of ibu any longer than that.)

I used an Ear Nose and Throat doctor, but basically the prescription was: Mouthguard. Ibuprofen. Warm compresses.

When the pain is really bad, a nice warm wet cloth helps a lot.

I also filled an old sock with beans and heated it in the microwave, and pressed that against the joint. Thing is, you have to get the pain down so the inflammation starts to subside.

Hope you feel better soon!

do any good. I was sent to an Oral Surgeon. He sent me to Pitt Dental school. They did all kinds of tests as my head was killing me. The results showed that the Skull was fractured. They didn't know if the fracture was coming from the outside in or the inside out. They did an MRI with the dye. I didn't have a tumor, but the jaw bone had turned into a sharp bone that was digging into the skull. I had surgery and the back jaw bone was removed. The dentist(head of Pitt Dental School) did not add any thing to hold the jaw up. What is holding it in place is the ligament. He said if I had trouble he would remove a rib and place it in the jaw. That was about 15 years ago. I don't mean to scare you. But if you are having trouble, do not wait to move up the scale to see more experienced. I honestly forgot the title of the last dental surgeon I saw. The recovery was not easy. I was out of school for a month. Had to use an instrument to open my mouth to speak and eat. Limited in what I could eat and still am. Please, I don't wish to scare you--just be aware of my situation. I wish you all the best. Deb.

specialist. I was lucky that I lived near the University of Pittsburgh's Dental School and had the head of the Department do the work. Sometimes I worry that my jaw will fall off, but so far so good. PS I use a mouthguard.

So thick it takes an effort to close my lips around it.

It was the only thing that forced my muscles to relax and stopped spasming against each other.

A good dentist or dental specialist with training in TMJ should be able to help you.

Made this worse by keeping my mouth open for a crown, but I needed a crown.

Its very defeating. Its been one thing after the other.

Thank you
