derby's Quick and Dirty Guide To Good Music for Youngsters with Open Minds

I figure with all this talk about lousy music floating around the Lounge, I should help point some of the youngsters on DU towards some good music that they're not likely to encounter in the media at large - gotta keep them boy bands and autotuned divas coming, you know, so that Big Daddy can buy himself another yacht!

So here you go, boys and girls - this selection is diverse enough that just about everyone should find something they like. Enjoy!

Laibach - Under the Iron Sky

Swans - A Hanging

Astronautalis - The Wondersmith and His Sons

Tenhi - Saivon Kimallus / Siniset Runot

Dimmu Borgir - Gateways

Tom Waits - Hell Broke Luce

Kate Bush - Lake Tahoe

Bohren & der Club of Gore - Midnight Black Earth

I hadn't looked at his site in a while, and so I spent another hour I didn't have last night going through the Hiphop section. I'm not much of a fan of hiphop, though there were a few people I recognized and still liked (Coolio, Public Enemy.)

knew about Ishkur. He (She?) is a little too tough on epic trance, though. Ishkur is also a little down on J/Kpop for my tastes.

Felix da Housecat! Armin van Buuren! Ayumi Hamasaki!

I'll go through it some tonight.

Of course, Ishkur is absolutely right that Kraftwerk started it all

and the brilliant Yellow Magic Orchestra in Asia.

If I could meet one person in music for dinner and a few drinks it would be Ryuichi Sakamoto.

It's a "different" sort of shibuya-kei, but my understanding is that Ishkur digs it.

The days of art rock are pretty much over, but I'd put that in that category.
