SRSLY, I can sympathize. I was in a car accident years ago and cracked three ribs. It wasnt just coughing but laughing or even taking a deep breath.

(73,928 posts)1 event the doc looked at the xray and said- well i see at least 3 broken. they were the last 1s and just smashed. this was 2 weeks later, cuz i k now theres nothing to be done. but as they started to heal they made the most ghastly popping noises. doc said that was them settling into a slightly diff arrangement, and the cartilage was objecting.
they most def do suck.

1 good thing about being a klutz all your life is learning to live w sprains.
which is to say- knowing when to vent, and when to just put your head down.

(63,086 posts)Mayo Clinic article:
https://www.mayoclinic.org/diseases-conditions/sciatica/symptoms-causes/syc-20377435
I'm familiar with that because of a sacroiliac injury from a bad fall on black ice long ago. Had to have cortisone injected into the joint, though that didn't help much.
Because sciatica can cause numbness in the affected leg (I had partial paralysis for a while, could not climb stairs safely), it makes the risk of falls greater because your foot may not be lifting as high as normal when you walk.
See a doctor soon if this doesn't get better quickly, or if it worsens, and please be very careful in the meantime.

(73,928 posts)its a bit weird, actually. sciatica goes down the middle of the leg, but this is more down the side. sore spot in the lower back, too. think its muscle, not nerve. sadly have much experience.
What are you doing to ease the pain? To heal? My friend hurt herself around her sciatica and ended up getting physical therapy and dry acupuncture. She tried steroids, but had side effects. She is better, but she was in a lot of pain for a couple of weeks. She is around 80 and has decided to quit kick-boxing

(73,928 posts)im pretty used to pain, have fibro. but this is sticking out cuz fibro has been good for a while and im getting used to not hurting all.the.damn.time.

(23,436 posts)I keep an ice pack in the freezer. It helps when I get a little achy.
Hope you heal quick.

(73,928 posts)sorta large area, but i think icing the top of the thing will help.

(23,436 posts)They won't stay cold long, but you can see if icing a big area helps. If it does, freeze a couple wet washcloths in plastic bags. Easy to carry around.
Oh yeah-muscle rub!

(77,270 posts)...alternating heat & cold is ideal for muscle injuries.
When I played sports, that wasn't conventional wisdom. That a big reason why slight muscle strains took so darned long to heal. We were doing it wrong. It was heat, heat & heat, back then.

(12,795 posts)Lift legs (one at a time I hope!) backwards. Try a few times each leg for equilibrium. Increase daily.
Not only will your butt restrengthen itself but those dearly departed butt cheeks will once again rise to the occasion.

(73,928 posts)ive done yoga off and on most of my life. very helpful, tho exhausting, for fibro flairs. but ive had a pretty good for about a year now, and its starting to pay off. the balance stuff alone is worth its weight at my age.
but ive always had a nice ass.

(12,121 posts)One wonderful stretch that I recommend is to sit in a chair. Cross your legs like a man, right ankle to left knee. Lean forward slowly and attempt to place your nose straight ahead. Hold this stretch, even if you can't get your nose straight ahead. Lean back and relax. Attempt another stretch.
Switch legs, left ankle to right knee, lean forward and attempt to place your nose in the center, hold this stretch. Lean back and relax. Try it again and hold.
Sending healing vibes to you, mopinko.

(2,799 posts)Lay on your back and pull your knee toward your chest. Rotate/roll your knee (if possible) slightly inward and outward to stretch the whole muscle.
