(26,081 posts)My dad was the cheapest man alive and he wouldn't allow mom to get us good clothes, especially when we were first going to school. So nothing cool like poodle skirts for us. However, we got really lucky and an aunt sent us a box of clothes from her girls who were a few years older than us. I got a PODDLE SKIRT! I was so freaking happy, I wore it to school the very next day and got all kinds of oohs and ahhs. My sister wore it the next year and was very happy with it too. That was a great skirt, made 4 young girls around the age of 6 very happy.
Extra good part, mom saw how much difference this made in our attitudes about school and started making our dresses. Pants weren't allowed in those days. We got to pick out the styles and material and everyone was happy. It was more fun than shopping and we had unique pretty clothes, not embarassing ones.

Seems that at 11 or 12, my life's direction was already being set!

It's blue water with the yellow blob of wax.
It's the 16" size.
It fits with the weirdness of the room.
13 guitars on the walls, 2 amps, a piano, recording gear, and a curio filled with laboratory glassware, the big TV & surround sound. Oh, and a lava lamp!
Niagara
(11,851 posts)1. Vinyl records, VHS tapes and cassette tapes. I'll never forget how to fix the cassette tape using a pencil.
2. Vacuum sweepers with a disposable bag instead a canister that is dumped out into the trash can.
3. Pay telephone booths, where Clark Kent changed into Superman.
4. Non-smoking and smoking sections at a dine-in restaurant.
5. Corduroy pants. Also adding panty hose or stockings.
6. A Commodore 64.
7. MTV. I mean they use to play music videos on MTV. Also, we had some sort of cable converter box that had 3 different band settings for the TV. I got into trouble once because my mom was recording something on VHS, I switched the box band to watch MTV and whatever she recorded didn't record.
8. Bath tissue came in pastel colors of yellow, pink, blue and green.
9. Saturday morning cartoons.
10. Encyclopedia's. We had several nice sets at home and if someone wanted to know something, we had to look it up. There wasn't internet available to look it up.

(34,295 posts)Then got a new one that was crap. I do have three Oreck cannisters that I've collected over the years.
I just got new flooring and the only carpet will be an 8 by 10 area rug in the living room.
Hubby bought a Ryobi shop vac. Been using that. No bags, but it picks up good and is light. I have a little dirt devil upright for the carpet.

(2,847 posts)At least I think that's what they were called. 2 hard golf ball sized plastic balls each suspended from a ~15" string, both strings joined where you hold the thing. You get a movement going where they clack together loudly repeatedly. I remember them getting banned from school for safety reasons. They were in bright tranlucent gem-like looking colors.
debm55
(60,612 posts)others. I had clackers and they were as you described --translucent gem balls.

(23,694 posts)1. Lincoln logs made of wood
2. Tinker Toys also wood
3. Erector sets - lots of metal for injuring yourself
4. Chemistry sets with the potential for injury
5. Toy stoves that actually worked. (I had one and cooked scrambled egg on it)
6. Wood burning kits good for a bad burn if you were not careful
7. Those plastic bubbles you blew up on a straw. It was some sort of goo in a tube that you put on the end of the straw and then blew into it. It reeked of chemicals and we loved them
8. Cap guns (are those still around)?
9 Smoking sections did not exist
10 Kookla, Fran and Ollie & Rootie Kazootie
11. Real Five & Dime stores
12. Original Nancy Drew books. I still have a few
13. Girls could not wear pants to school, unless it was very cold. Then we could wear them under our dresses
14. Drugstores with soda fountains and lunch counters.
15. Creeks to wade or swim in. Out in the country you make do with what you've got. It was 15 miles to the nearest swimming pool
There have to be more, since I grew up in the 50s & 60s but this is what I came up with on short notice
None of these things exist anymore
