(27,703 posts)My dad gave us maybe 3 cents each for a job well done..this was when I was in the 4-5th grade. My sister and I went to Badgers neighborhood little store n got candy. But..we sat in there and ate some before we left. When we got home, my dad wanted to see what we got. Wheres the chocolate? O, we didnt get any of that then why is it on your face?! To make a long story short, he marched us right back and we had to tell him we stole some of his candy and heres the money for what we ate. Omg. I was beyond embarrassed and the truth is..I never took anything again. Welll..maybe paper and pens from work but you know what I mean!

and a handful of Bazooka Bubble Gum
.and those little Nik-L-Nip
wax bottles of cherry, lemon, lime, and grape flavored water
.then Id chew all the bottles to get all the juice out of the wax
..thats it!

surely something else will come to mind, but sheesh its been over 50 years. Glad I could remember this much.
At the movie show I used to get a whole Sugar Daddy because it lasted a long time, but in early middle age I had to give those up for fear theyd dislodge my fillings. The other thing I used to get at the movie show was a little box of Tomoe Ame gummy rice candy wrapped in a layer of dissolvable rice paper and a layer of regular paper.

(24,906 posts)has a candy rack containing dozens of these old style candies. I mean there is stuff there I haven't seen in 50 years. And it's all fresh stuff. I wonder if they've been continuing to make this stuff for all these years, or are they reviving it? They even have bubble gum Cigars. It's like walking into a candy store in the 50s. I like the little wax bottles with the sweet liquid in them.
debm55
(61,732 posts)Mr.Bill
(24,906 posts)and the packaging even looks like it did years ago, except there are bar codes. It's not real cheap, either. Pretty much contemporary prices.

(61,732 posts)I didn't buy because there are candies I didn't like or can't eat like jawbreakers.

(3,108 posts)I was thinking in the here and now and not a reminiscing moment. Now that I realize what you were asking,
it would be 2 Bit'o'Honey, two Maryjanes, and a Sugar Daddy.
I also loved Sen-Sens, but they were never a penny in my lifetime.

(29,292 posts)Every Friday after elementary school I'd stop at my little town's library to borrow books for the weekend and buy candy at the grocery store if I had pennies. Even now sometimes on Fridays if I'm out walking around and it's overcast and quiet like those long ago Pacific Northwest afternoons, I remember licorice and books and feel happy.

But, if I had a full pocket and had to pick 5 I'd get:
A pack of BeechNut Fruit Stripe gum
Bottle Caps
A Tootsie Roll
Spree
and either Red Hots, or Lemon Heads

The clerk would bring out a small brown bag, you would select you candy and he would place it in the bag. Some candies were place in a cellophane sleeve--like the malt balls. but they were still a penny a sleeve. Clerk would get mad if you changed you mind or the number you wanted. We paid our money and left, or in some cases were thrown out.I guess it depends on where or when you lived. Mine were a penny
