My dad gave us maybe 3 cents each for a job well done..this was when I was in the 4-5th grade. My sister and I went to Badger’s neighborhood little store n got candy. But..we sat in there and ate some before we left. When we got home, my dad wanted to see what we got. Where’s the chocolate? O, we didn’t get any of that…then why is it on your face?! To make a long story short, he marched us right back and we had to tell him we stole some of his candy and here’s the money for what we ate. Omg. I was beyond embarrassed and the truth is..I never took anything again. Welll..maybe paper and pens from work but you know what I mean!

At the movie show I used to get a whole Sugar Daddy because it lasted a long time, but in early middle age I had to give those up for fear they’d dislodge my fillings. The other thing I used to get at the movie show was a little box of Tomoe Ame gummy rice candy wrapped in a layer of dissolvable rice paper and a layer of regular paper.

Every Friday after elementary school I'd stop at my little town's library to borrow books for the weekend and buy candy at the grocery store if I had pennies. Even now sometimes on Fridays if I'm out walking around and it's overcast and quiet like those long ago Pacific Northwest afternoons, I remember licorice and books and feel happy.

The clerk would bring out a small brown bag, you would select you candy and he would place it in the bag. Some candies were place in a cellophane sleeve--like the malt balls. but they were still a penny a sleeve. Clerk would get mad if you changed you mind or the number you wanted.
