(2,492 posts)She's recovering, and they are stabilizing a variety of things, ie, she is acidotic, still intubated, and not awake yet. I will call back later in the afternoon and her nurse for today will let me know if anything changes that I need to know about.
So thanks to all for your good energy sharing! So far, so good!!

(3,589 posts)Where we took care of heart and lung transplant patients straight from surgery. With a good transplant surgeon, a heart transplant is almost routine. Meaning that the surgery itself, for the patient, shouldnt be any more difficult than coronary artery bypass graft (CABG, pronounced cabbage) surgery. The anti rejection medications can be tough, though. Some can cause serious side effects like psychosis.
Some tips for recovery:
#1) The key to physical recovery is getting up and walking, and using the incentive spirometer as directed. Both will hurt, but the more these are done, the less it will hurt, and sooner - and lessens the chance of postop pneumonia.
#2) Dont be afraid to ask for pain meds, either. Especially for walking or if doing the IS is painful. Keep the pain manageable: Ask for meds when pain gets to around a 4 on the scale of 1-10 - no later than 5. Its easier to keep pain under control than to try and get it back under control: We run the risk of overmedicating (and then having to give naloxone, aka Narcan) or, not being able to give enough meds to get the pain under control.
Hope this helps!

(2,492 posts)She has a very low pain threshold from years of chronic back pain, so she won't be shy about asking for pain support.
I have told her she is like the Princess and the pea story.

(2,492 posts)but I am overwhelmed by the response!
She is only 60 years old and had no real heart problems til February 2022. Suddenly she had this really crappy heart function, like an ejection fraction of 9!! That is almost as awful as it can be.
She's had lots of support since then but yesterday, suddenly, there was a heart available!!
So the suddenness is kind of stunning.
Her dog, a little chiweenie she just adopted this year, and who is totally a one person dog, is grieving terribly, just because she has been gone for a day. He could use some tots and pears, too!
As soon as they text me something I will post it.The operation will be 8-12 hours long. I won't be awake for all of that, but I will wake up and check to see if they have sent me an update!

I pray that she will recover quickly and completely.

(2,492 posts)They extubated her last night, she is sort of waking up, at least enough to talk to them as they care for her.
I think I am going to wait til tomorrow to go visit, and let her rest because she is in so much pain right now she is full of morphine.
I am just so happy she has come through this so well!
Her clingy doggo is forming a bond with our other roommate who has a little dog the same size, so that is working out.
I have always had bigger dogs, Aussies, but after my last one died, I decided to just enjoy the other dogs and pamper the last cat I have. He is quite demanding, jealous of anyone else who is getting my attention, and walks around screaming like a banshee about it.
Thanks again for the support! You all did a great job of pulling her through!

Kick in to the DU tip jar?
This week we're running a special pop-up mini fund drive. From Monday through Friday we're going ad-free for all registered members, and we're asking you to kick in to the DU tip jar to support the site and keep us financially healthy.
As a bonus, making a contribution will allow you to leave kudos for another DU member, and at the end of the week we'll recognize the DUers who you think make this community great.
