(29,732 posts)As a child, I liked My Favorite Martian. Shortly afterward, the airwaves got saturated by war- or military-themed sitcoms, among other offerings from the networks. That fact wasnt lost on me, having the war in Vietnam come spilling into our living room with the evening news. It wasnt until M*A*S*H that I watched a sitcom with war or the military as the backdrop.

(29,732 posts)Perhaps they wanted to bask in the reflected glory of Steve McQueen in The Great Escape. I did read years later that most of the actors playing German officers were Jewish. I think the actor who portrayed LeBeau as well. I dont get it, but it takes all kinds to make a world, I suppose.

(29,732 posts)The producers could have done so much better. Instead, we have a non-animated Road Runner & Coyote cartoon.

(17,151 posts)First off, the war had only been over for 20 years when it first aired. That means that most of the military veterans that returned from WWII were still in their 40's after surviving fighting a brutal enemy regime.
I can't imagine a television executive in these days even suggesting a TV comedy about a Nazi prison camp. They would be fired and perhaps never be able to work in the industry again. Not to mention protests etc. Yet, back then, not only was it aired, it was quite popular with the public.
What I find most interesting is that those Americans who actually fought the Nazi regime in the last big world war and lived through those times, did not take great offense, and understood that it was not to be taken seriously. Of course it made the Germans look like idiots.
Now days, there would be a huge ground swell of people, none of whom were alive back then, or had first hand life experiences with the war, that would take it very seriously, with demands it be taken off the air and those responsible should be held to task. Just shows how much things have changed in the last 55 years or so.

(29,732 posts)I witnessed Robin Williams entering a comedy box canyon from which he may not have escaped. His antics were still hilarious, but they were becoming a bit trite. Jonathan Winters provided a comedic backstop who could add to Williams character. If not for that, M&M could have been lost in obscurity - and Robin Williams along with it.

(76,706 posts)That was a few years later. I believe the actor was introduced in season 2, but not as Dietrich. He didn't become a featured player until Gregory Sierra left the show.
Lots of really good ancillary characters like Levitt, Lugar, Scanlon and the like.
I found it very funny.
