"Umbrella" Tree?

I just thought of a tree that was common on front lawns in the early sixties in NY, that was shaped like an umbrella and typically the lower three or four feet of the trunk was whitewashed.
It was planted as a single specimen, and I think it grew naturally in that shape.
Strange how things pop into your mind unannounced.
As with many things,it seemed to go out of fashion at some point. Mimosa trees became the next trendy front yard tree.

Those things develop deep roots and screw up septic tanks badly! Now that I know this, they are weeds that I have to pull constantly.
