Two years after Walkman, bus rides -- the only sound you would hear, was the clicking of cassette tapes being switched.

(25,126 posts)Curiously, it was called The Soundabout. Made by Sony, it had a blue metallic finish and a blue leather case. The volume controls were a pair of stereo faders and it had an orange button that, when pressed, would lower the volume to half and activate a built-in microphone so you could hear someone talking to you.
They werent ubiquitous yet and people would stare at me wondering what the thing was. It lasted more than ten years! I loved it.

(24,906 posts)the knock-offs came soon and they were way cheaper. I had one around '81-'82 and I think I paid 19.95 for it. It also had an AM/FM radio in it. I really used it a lot. I had a good cassette recorder as part of my home stereo and made my own mix tapes.
Kick in to the DU tip jar?
This week we're running a special pop-up mini fund drive. From Monday through Friday we're going ad-free for all registered members, and we're asking you to kick in to the DU tip jar to support the site and keep us financially healthy.
As a bonus, making a contribution will allow you to leave kudos for another DU member, and at the end of the week we'll recognize the DUers who you think make this community great.
