For the record, Ive never been into the Grateful Dead or Dead & Co. I know a few songs and appreciate the longevity of the bands over the course my 58 years of life. However, my 18 year old son Owen is an old soul when it comes to all things, especially music. Hes a a huge John Mayer fan and when Mayer began playing with Bob Weir and Dead & Co., Owen was all in and therefore I began to listen to them a few years ago.
When Dead & Co announced their final tour, we tried to get tickets and couldnt get it done. In October 2022, I was about to go to an after market ticket seller when Owens dad was, miraculously, caller #7 on a local radio station and won two tickets to see Dead & Co at The Gorge Amphitheater in George, WA. The child was beside himself
and looking forward to this concert got him through the doldrums of his senior year in high school.
He was going to make the trip with one of his buddies and one by one, Owens friends backed out due to college tours, family vacations and work schedules. Owen wanted to take the trip alone and I wasnt down with him driving 5 hours, staying in a hotel and attending this event alone so we agreed that I would be his companion on this trip.
We hit the road a week ago today
as I said, its a 5 hour drive from Missoula to George. As we zipped over the two mountain passes, we listened to true crime podcasts and of course, plenty of Dead & Co. We talked about friendships changing with the start of college and the worry that things might not be the same. We talked about making adult decisions and how he might know if hes doing the right things
we talked about making mistakes and how to get back on track. He told me how much he loves flying and how happy he is when hes in the cockpit of the little plane hes using to get his certification. I was grateful for every exchange we had on this trip.
The concert was amazing. The people watching, second to none. I was impressed with the quality of the music and the production. The Dead Heads received John Mayer quite well. One thing that I did not know is that the set list for this tour changes every single night. I think thats is a sign of immense respect for the people that see the band night after night. The show is new and different every single day. I inhaled more weed than I ever have in my whole life! It was the happiest crowd I have ever been around. It was a vibe and a culture that was easy to be in.
We had a blast and I will treasure it forever. Im actually kinda sad that this is the final tour and Ill never experience it again.
Thanks for reading
❤️

(2,133 posts)and it w as great. I've been to over 50 Dead shows some of them being famous. I went to 7/8/78 at Red Rocks. It is known as one of the five most famous shows. It is the famous Werewolves of London show. There is nothing like a Grateful Dead show and I have seen everyone including the final weekend at the Fillmore with the Allman Brothers and The Who before Tommy and performing Tommy.

big state but not a lot of people
seems everyone knows a person or two up here.

(2,133 posts)She is very cool and liberal which is rare in Montana. I met her in Atlanta and took her to a Dead show at the Fox.
MontanaMama
(24,751 posts)Liberals are more rare in Kalispell than they are here in Missoula. We do have at least one DUer in Kalispell.
Casady1
(2,133 posts)that there is one in Kalispell. I have been to Glacier twice and I have been in Kalispell. I was supposed to go to Glacier in 2021 and had reservations to Many Glacier Hotel. As you know it is close to impossible to et them. My wife got sick and we never made it there. The last time I went was in 1982 and at the time only 1,000,000 people went to Glacier as it was unknown and out of the way. Now 3,000,000 go to Glacier. I probably would hate it now.
In 1980 two people were killed by a grizzly just outside the park. I camped at that same site the night before.
MontanaMama
(24,751 posts)It is also being overrun at the moment and you have to have a permit to be there. I can't even believe it...we used to be able to hop in the car and drive up to the park and just enjoy it. It is very different now and it makes me sad.
You camped in the park? You. Are. Brave. I don't think I would sleep a wink if I tent camped up there and I've live in bear country my whole life.
My kiddo did a solo flight up to Glacier and back just this morning. He said the air was calm and the views were insane.
Casady1
(2,133 posts)We took the highline trail out to the Granite park Chalet and all the way out to Kootnai campground and took the boat into Canada. We then hitchhiked back to Glacier. You could do that in 1982. It was 3 nights out. I also did another from Cut bank.
I had the pass to get in and had the reservations to Many Glacier.
This guy does the best videos on Glacier and what it is iike to hike it. He has many on Glacier.

(2,133 posts)the 7th or 8th? I took my son who is 30 years old and a musician. Like you it was a great evening.
MontanaMama
(24,751 posts)It was my 18 year old kiddo and me. We actually won these tickets last October on a local radio station! My son was going to take a friend but in the end, nobody that he runs with cares about Dead & Co or John Mayer and the child is deeply into both. Since his dad got to go with him to see John Mayer this past April, I got to take this road trip and we just had a blast. Lordy it was hot tho. Then again, the heat is why they grow all that food in that part of Washington. It truly was memorable. Owen, my son, is also a musician
hes played piano since he was 6 and guitar the past few years. Its really fun to listen to this music through a musicians perspective.
As a side note
and maybe a question for you
and this comes from my son
he noticed that he didnt see any person of color at The Gorge show. Looking back, I didnt either. That venue is in a deep red part of Washington and the only POC are in service jobs. But, weve streamed quite a few Dead & Co shows this tour and Ive been scanning the crowds and havent seen many folks of color. Not a judgement, just an observation and Im curious about your thoughts?
Casady1
(2,133 posts)The Dead doesn't really attract people of color. Most bands of that era don't. The music is really different whether it was the Band, Bob Dylan or Joni Mitchell to what was popular in the black community.
You would think Joni Mitchell would be one who would garner interest because she became jazzy and she grew but jazz is not overly popular in the Black community.
The Dead are not for everyone. They apply many of the same principles as jazz as it take listener involvement and their topics in their songs are more about the life experience in living in America and not just 'love songs".
I think they do by and large attract a college educated audience with dose of adventure.
Bill Walton a well known deadhead summed it up very well on his 30 for 30. The band surges like a basketball team. They can get really intense and then quiet it down. I have never seen another band do that.
I am really glad you and your son went to the show. It really is a celebration.
It's funny I didn't see the Dead for many years after Jerry died(once) but last year I wanted to see them but my wife got sick so I didn't go. This time I did get tix on the first day. I didn't expect that much because when I did see them on simulcast( 2015) and a couple of others I thought they were only ok.
By the second song in Atlanta my thoughts were "I am at a rock concert". From every show I have listened to on this tour they have been great. I haven't listened to your show yet but I will.
I have seen many of their most famous shows and I like to think I saw almost everyone.
I did go to the original Woodstock and I did see all the bands from that era including Cream, Blind Faith and anyone else you can think of.
To me the three greatest bands live are the Dead, the Allmans and the Who. I even saw Stevie Wonder be the opening band for the Rolling Stones.
I also did go see Steely Dan when they finally payed again live in 1993 and a couple of other times after that.
MontanaMama
(24,751 posts)I was hoping my question didn't sound judgy because I didn't intend that, by any means. We were just noticing.
I was never into the Dead when I was younger...I didn't really give them a chance but ever since my kiddo got into them, I have listened to them and have grown to really appreciate them. I'm a lyrics listener and is my son and deciphering the songs has been so much fun...kinda like a puzzle. My son is a musician, piano and guitar, with a definite bent for the blues and I think this is the attraction of Dead & Co. I know it's one of the reasons he loves John Mayer so much. I wish I had gone to more shows but it has been fun to stream them. I'm sorry its all over.
Thanks for your thoughtful response. I'll forward it to the boy for his consideration and I know he will appreciate it like I do.

You and your son will appreciate it.
One thing I liked was the fact it wasn't an old geezer show. I was reading they are peaking in popularity right now. They have double the listening than the Rolling stones on spotify.

I was worried my kiddo would be embarrassed to be at this show with his mom but he didn't act like it. A lot of 18 year olds wouldn't have it. That said, Owen went to see John Mayer this past April in Seattle with his dad and didn't seem to mind that either. He's a good one, that's for sure.
We were indeed pretty far back. They were grass seats and that ended up being a blessing in disguise. It was 100 degrees at show time and being a little higher up on the hill with grass under our feet was a good thing. Not to mention being able to view the panoramic views Columbia River. There were speaker towers all over the venue and that made for a wonderful sound experience with a little bit of elbow room which isn't possible on the floor.
John Mayer is indeed a badass. I was really taken with how he blended in when he should ans would shine when it was his turn. He just gets better with time.

(4,798 posts)And a great venue. I was fortunate to see Steely Dan there in 96, had the time of my life. Flew in from Anchorage to attend.
Side note: My brother, who flies lear jets, regularly flies John. Says hes real private, likes to be left alone but always thanks the crew.
MontanaMama
(24,751 posts)My kiddo will be really excited to hear about your brother. He's a John Mayer super fan. And, he's working on his private pilot's license right now and would like to do what your brother does. So cool!!! How did your brother come to know John?
On edit: The Gorge...isn't it something? I've been to a few shows there over the years and it just does not get old.

(4,798 posts)My brother has been with the lear jet company that John uses for some time, is a captain, so he flies all the time and has also flown John Cougar Mellencamp numerous times, as well as Mrs. Walgreens. She likes to get picked up at home in Florida, then pick up friends somewhere on the eastern seaboard and go to New York to shop for the day.
The Gorge is the best venue Ive been to, but only that one time. Im a Steely Dan super fan.

(1,762 posts)We had a blast! Went with friends the first night, they had to head back to Detroit for the Taylor Swift show the next night.
We had a great father/daughter day in Chicago before the second night.
It was her third show, and my 31st. I went to the show in Indiana a couple weeks later for my last. I was lucky to have seen 18 shows with Jerry, before the latest iterations.
I have called Dead shows a celebration of life since my first show in 88. I wasnt lucky enough to get to spend whole summers on tour, but caught them whenever I could.
So glad you were able to spend such quality time with your son.
This is what I was hoping to hear from people. As a Dead newbie, I would absolutely agree that the experience is indeed a celebration of life. There were a ton of sons and daughters at The Gorge.
Good on you, dad.

(114,671 posts)even if they're getting young guys to do the heavy lifting these days. "Sugaree" is probably my least favorite Dead song but the instrumental parts of your clip did not disappoint, took me right back to a concert venue in Boston in 1969, thick clouds of pot smoke drifting all around, Jerry Garcia's then girlfriend (drop dead gorgeous, later his wife) dancing backstage.
Oh, I got it. I could never be a Dead Head, I lacked the trust fund, something every one of them I knew could rely on when they couldn't sell jewelry or hash pipes or something out of their vans.
I do wonder if there's any different vibe to their concerts when they play recreational cannabis states.
MontanaMama
(24,751 posts)and go to show after show...how do they pay for it? How do they take that much time off work? Owen and I were puzzling over it. We were in line listening to the people around us compare all the Dead & Co shows they'd been to this summer alone. It was astounding.
Yeah...the cannabis. There was so much of it and other psychedelics around. It was a sight to behold. It occurred to me that this is all part of the experience and why some people go.
On edit: The second to the last song they played was Black Muddy River. I'd never heard it before and I was slayed...I had tears in my eyes listening the the lyrics. My kiddo looks at me and says "Mama, it's a metaphor." Yeah...baby boy, I know. But I didn't say anything.
Warpy
(114,671 posts)and that's a hell of a long time to be touring, so a lot of those people probably started going to nearby concerts way back when on their days off or even taking a couple of vacation days to go to a venue a state or two away. 2 concerts a year would add upp to over 100, easily.
The Dead Heads I knew were all young, all made jewelry or bongs or bought books wholesale, whatever they needed for gas money, the trust fund adequate for typical road food beyond what they'd brought with them. I knew about the trust funds because they bought things where I worked and paid for them with the checks.

(4,232 posts)We saw the two shows at Saratoga Springs, NY. The saturday show wasn't anything to write home about, but the Sunday show was fabulous, probably my favorite Dead show. There was also more people at both shows than I have /ever/ seen at SPAC. It was nuts.
Also, while it is technically their final tour, they'll all keep playing in one incarnation or another, so hopefully you'll get more chances.
