The DU Lounge
Related: Culture Forums, Support ForumsFriday Night I Got The Job Thread. With a nice vodka buzz to go with it.
Ask me anything.
The community health clinic two blocks away hired me, and theres a lot of crossover with our current patient population. So I can continue to see my current patients without being accused of poaching.
Base salary current with what Im earning now, plus a signing bonus. Thirty-two hours of patient visits per week, with eight hours of admin time. So if all my charts are completed for the week, admin day is basically a paid day off.
This is the organization where I made my start as a Medical Assistant all those years ago. So this is like coming home. The PA who trained me is now the medical director, so Ive got friends in high places.
And its the same organization Mrs. Aristus works for as a Dental Hygienist. So were under the same roof, so to speak. (Not really. She works at a different clinic.)
Anyway, very happy tonight. Twelve years is a long time to spend in the wilderness. Its good to be coming home.
Thank you for always being there for me. I love you all

(72,187 posts)The salary negotiation was a nail-biter. So many of my former colleagues have hopped over to the rival clinic, I thought they'd lowball me knowing how badly we all want to get away from the madness. I did all right.

(10,293 posts)What is the Vodka you are celebrating with tonight?
Aristus
(72,187 posts)In order to support a small, local business. It's actually horrible; tastes like over-cleaner. Good only for mixing. Drinking it neat is an act of mortification of the pleasure centers.
As soon as this bottle is gone, I'm getting a bottle of Finlandia.

Should I buy a 52 Chevy Pickup or a 54 GMC pickup?
Aristus
(72,187 posts)My platoon sergeant had one like that when I was stationed in Germany. At the end of the workday, we'd all pile in the back for the ride home and drink in the Bavarian countryside. Like something out of a movie. Go for it.
I assume that was all spelled correctly. I'm a little buzzed...

(72,187 posts)It's distilled by a local company on Bainbridge Island. Thought I'd try a bottle to support the hometown boys. Unfortunately, it's awful; tastes like oven cleaner. After it's gone, I'm going to try a distiller i haven't drank before - Finlandia is on my list.

(8,200 posts)...what field of medicine/specialization do you work in?
Also, what's your favorite vodka?
Aristus
(72,187 posts)The only reason it is stressful is because of pressure from admin. My patients are challenging, but wonderful, and I love them all.
Favorite vodka brand (so far) : Absolut (all flavors), although Ketel One is a close second. I used to like Russian Standard, although for obvious reasons, I've sworn off for the duration. I'm also buying Ukrainian vodkas when they are available, also for obvious reasons.

I keep a bottle of bubbly chilling for special occasions, of which this most certainly qualifies! Here is to you, dear friend, and may this new adventure be wonderful. Breakng out the Belgian chocoale as well. Nothing but the best for our Aristus!
How are you and Mrs. A planning to celebrate? When do you start?
Aristus
(72,187 posts)And we will likely celebrate with a visit to England sometime next year, along with a cruise of the Baltic Sea. I've been to Europe several times, but she has never left the North American continent, so she has a lot to look forward to.

(72,187 posts)Rum punch is Heavenly.
If you've never visited Jamaica, go at least once, for the rum punch if nothing else. The punch is dreamy, and as cheap as water.

(102,790 posts)Congrats, what great set up, people you know and a place you feel comfortable in, excellent change.
Aristus
(72,187 posts)But the CEO of the company has been asking my wife for years when I was going to come over and work for them. I was always reluctant to move, because I didn't want to leave my homeless patients. Now that I know I can still visit with them without being accused of poaching, and still getting a decent salary, I made the move.
Thanks for being so supportive this whole time.

I don't know if anybody can have their "dream" job, but it sounds like this one gets a lot of checkmarks. I'd have a drink with you, but my digestive tract was tearing me up this afternoon and I didn't get to make my grocery/beer run to the store. I have a consultation with a GE next week and will schedule a colonoscopy since I had a positive stool specimen.

(8,582 posts)I remember way back when you were deciding to go to school for this, unless I'm confused.
In any case, well done.
Aristus
(72,187 posts)until I started Physician Assistant school in 2008. They promised me a job for when I graduated, but by the time I did in 2010, they were in the middle of a hiring freeze. In any case, by that time, the company I work for now had taken over operation of the homeless clinic in town, and hired me on the spot after I applied.
One of my instructors in school had previously worked for my current organization, and warned me it was going to be a tough slog. And it has been. But it will soon be over, and I'll move on to the next phase of my career.
