(2,214 posts)He was feral the first few months of his life. He still wants to go outdoors, but there are hungry raccoons and coyotes in the neighborhood. I built a small catio that he can access whenever he wants. He loves spending time out there.
There are lots of good catio ideas on Youtube.

(9,148 posts)Our three kitties like theirs a lot. We have coyotes regularly strolling through our yard, and I know they wouldnt last long if they had free-range privileges.

(156,595 posts)Some would probably have shot the coyote, but this man has a heart.
What a relief to see it freed!

(12,104 posts)I have a really good book about coyotes called "Coyote America" by Dan Flores. Coyotes are amazing animals.

(36,631 posts)I was afraid a cut strand was going to fly back and wrap around either him or the coyote.

(31,300 posts)the coyote could panic and hurt him. i got the impression the poor guy was just too exhausted for that

(36,631 posts)Did it look to you like the coyote turned and snapped once near the end of the video, or was he just watching what the man was doing? With my bandwidth, I only see a low-res video.

(31,300 posts)and yes, the coyote was snapping at him by the end. i guess he was just too tired to get himself onto the ground. that's a brave man.

(36,631 posts)When I was a teen, I discovered a dog caught in the top two strands of fencing on a remote part of my grandmother's farm. The dog was already dead and dessicated. I can still see the half doughnut shaped trench he clawed out trying to get free.

(23,135 posts)I've seen 2 unfortunate things like that, that haunt me to this day.
Hermit-The-Prog
(36,631 posts)As best I could figure out, the dog tried jumping the fence but his hind foot caught the top wire as he came down and pulled it beneath the 2nd wire, forming a trap.
If only the dog could have jumped a few inches higher;
if only the dog could have jumped a few inches further;
if only the fence wires were a bit looser;
if only the fence wires were a bit tighter;
if only I could have discovered the dog sooner.

(23,135 posts)Trying to find a reason, trying to make sense of such an awful thing. The best advice I ever found was that some things are unacceptable. When I saw that, it got me out of a seemingly endless loop to understand why. I still think and think about things that bothered me, but the cycle doesn't last as long.

(29,584 posts)I really hate barbed wire, but I've had coyotes come in and take several animals....barn cats, ducks, geese, chickens. One little mini-doxie was dragged across our yard fence in Calif., and had his throat ripped open. Believe it or not, he survived, and always wanted to do battle again with coyotes when he heard them howling.
If people have cattle, they're going to have barbed wire. I've spent a fair amount of time taking it down on my last farm, and on this one. I've had it snap back and hit me in the face, (lived with that scar for awhile.) I've had a strand buried in the grass that we missed, wrap around a horse's legs, and cut them badly. I found a deer caught in the top wires of my neighbors fence, hanging upside down. As I approached her to try freeing her, she finally kicked free.
Its dangerous stuff. And I wouldn't leave any animal to die that way.

(23,135 posts)He lives nears LA. His in-laws live in the hills. His m-i-l let their little dog out, and was watching out the window. A coyote ran at the dog, and they both took off around the house, in a fenced yard. The m-i-l opened the patio door and the dog darted in. She slammed the door shut and the coyote ran headfirst right into the glass and bounced off. She said it looked and sounded just like a cartoon chase. Lucky dog, good timing!

(29,584 posts)And quite cunning. We heard several stories in CA about a single one luring a dog out to chase it, only for the dog to be set upon by a waiting pack of them.

(2,386 posts)We cant let our pets wander at all because of the bobcats and coyotes, but no animal deserves to die caught in a fence. Id like to think I would have dine the same. Of course, in suburbia we dont have wire fences.
