(81,263 posts)I do not understand the Pepsi drinkers at all.
And then to further refine the schemata we have Coke Classic people
who actually drink it out of a metal can. (Shudders, they might as well
be moved to the Pepsi person category.)
Of course the only way to drink Coke Classic is from a fountain.
McDonald's has the sublime fountain version of Coke Classic.
It has the perfect ratio of liquid to carbonation. It gives you the burn
down the back of your throat and the overall taste is different from all other
versions.
But in a pinch, drinking Coke Classic out of a glass bottle is acceptable.
Of course we now have the Mexican version of Coke Classic, made with sugar,
not corn syrup. I keep trying to like it, but the taste is off putting.

(44,804 posts)Really hard to beat those frosty green bottles that were so heavy you could use them as a hammer. Delicious, 6 1/2 ounces is just right. Also had a lunch counter that served great soda fountain Coke

(81,263 posts)The local Subway sandwich shop recently got one of those new fancy
soda dispensers (self serve with buttons you push). The coke classic
was not bad at all. But the machine broke down and they haven't fixed it yet
so I had to deal with that disappointment. It is the closest drinkable coke classic
to me.

(33,643 posts)I occasionally say I'll have Coke with a meal and when they say is Pepsi okay I'm like ... nope. I won't drink any other cola but Coca Cola Classic. Pepsi is a pale, horrid imitation. And don't get me started on RC. Absolute swill.
McDonald's does their Coke mix consistently well, no argument there.
I don't mind Mexican coke from a bottle, I'll do that one too but it's not worth paying premium prices for.

(81,263 posts)Usually they let you know they only have Pepsi so you can say no thanks.
The worst sin however is when you order a regular coke and they bring you a Diet Coke.
Diet Coke is ten times worse than Pepsi.
I am a very healthy eater so Coke Classic is an indulgence I confine to occasional treats.
So having to taste Diet Coke is a travesty.

(33,643 posts)I'm just saying in a Captain/Coke there's already so much sugar in the Captain you don't really need more in the Coke, comes out tasting really close to the same way even with the Diet Coke.
I try to save on hfcs where I can, cause nothing makes me fat like that crap does.
Irish_Dem
(81,263 posts)Sounds like a very dicey situation if it involves the dreaded Diet Coke.
I know, I have some health issues and the doctor/specialist specifically warned
against hfcs. That is why I tried to switch to Mexican Coke which is made with
sugar not hfcs. But it cannot compare to fountain coke, so I just strictly regulate my
intake.

(25,048 posts)It's odd that Coke and Pepsi products are in the same machine. I usually see them tightly segregated.
Although I would have stared at that Mountain Dew button for a while first.

(9,062 posts)It mixes well with Jack Daniels. Captain Morgan too.
If I'm in the unfortunate position of only having Seagram's, I'll go for the 7up.
I was going to say that it depends on which alcoholic beverage I was going to water it down with since that's the only reason I would be selecting a carbonated beverage in the first place!
Hugh_Lebowski
(33,643 posts)I've taken to doing Captain/Diet Coke, tastes pretty much the same and man is a Captain and regular Coke a sugar bomb (not that I won't drink it but man is it sweet).
With Jack or Crown I'll do regular coke as they're not super sweet like Captain ... but just a splash.
Shermann
(9,062 posts)So yeah, that is a substantial increase in a mixed drink.
Diet drinks are generally a bust for me, especially with booze. I'd rather just drink straight liquor. It makes a statement: I'm not F'ing around.

(29,732 posts)I guess if I were literally dying of thirst, Id go with the Diet Coke. I cant abide the taste of HFCS-sweetened soda, and something about Diet Pepsi is distinctly off-putting. I would have picked Diet Dr. Pepper if itd been a selection.
Hugh_Lebowski
(33,643 posts)None of them are great but it tastes the most like the sugary version out of any of them.

(21,202 posts)Coke Zero is also better than Diet Coke, which is swill.

(28,264 posts)Despise Diet Doke, Pepsi, Diet Pepsi; I hallucinate on Dr. Pepper (carbonated prune juice); Mountain Dew is too sweet for me. I MIGHT drink 7Up or Sunkist Orange, and could maybe tolerate Coke classic. But by and large, I'd rather just pass this by. YMMV.
Hugh_Lebowski
(33,643 posts)ice tea with a splash of lemonade (assuming they have both).
I'll OCCASIONALLY have a hankering for just a plain ol' regular Coke but will only have a few sips. I like it but ... too much HFCS.
The ONE full sugar soda I might do a whole 12 oz serving of is Squirt. Still like those quite a bit.

(40,969 posts)There was a vending machine at one of the gas stations in town that my friend & I discovered had the coldest pop in town. It was one of those old types with the long vertical door with the glass bottles behind it.

(9,062 posts)I bought a Coke this week and it proudly asserts that it has the "Original Taste" instead.
This is false advertising in my opinion as it has neither cane sugar nor cocaine.

(27,633 posts)Compared to Pepsi, Coke has a medicinal taste to it, at least to me. Will drink it if that's all there is and I'm hankering for a soda, but oft times will pass it up for water. Always liked Coke when you could get it at a soda fountain. You know, the would add they syrup and then the soda water. That was pretty tasty.

(29,406 posts)I never was a big fan. I did like Squirt.
Soda was never on my parents shopping lists/
If I had to drink a Coke today, it would be the Mexican version in the green glass bottles. My maternal grandmother used to keep that on hand, back in the late 1950s-early 60s, when the extended family would get together in the summer for family reunions. I can still remember the smell, and how the bubbles stung my nose and the back of my throat.
