Many reviews are calling it a masterpiece and it sounds like a cliche. It is not a perfect movie, but it comes very close.
The filmmaking is exquisite. From the film moving back and forth between color to black and white to make a point, to the historical accuracy and the faithful adaptation of the Pulitzer Prize winning biography, and the portrayal of Oppenheimer himself as both a genius and a flawed man leaves little to criticize.
Three hours makes for a long movie. And a lot was left out. Christopher Nolan had to make a choice between focusing on the unending drama of Oppenheimer's personal life or the unending drama of the world entering the age of Atomic warfare. He would have had to make a six hour movie to do both.
Much of the film is about Oppenheimer not willing to be a team player in the aftermath of WWII, reminding us he knows right from wrong, and suffering the consequences of not abandoning his own moral compass. You feel his pain.
The script was superb and acting first rate. Cillian Murphy was perfect as Robert Oppenheimer.
Now I'll wait for it to stream so I can watch it again and get the things that I missed the first time.

(10,860 posts)is redundant. The things that got me was the attack on him for his past communist connects. The boogy-man of the 50's, even continuing into the 60's with Vietnam was the "Red Scare" Then as if by magic when we needed cheap labor for manufacturing all of the sudden everything about China was cool.
Now it is obvious to me that people are beating the drums of war again - can't get enough of that stuff.

(5,151 posts)I had not planned to see this movie; I know Oppenheim's story well, but your review has intrigued me. Christopher Nolan should send you a finder's fee!
