Wait, can't forget Bunny Berrigan and Vera Lynn.

The "Miles of Aisles" album is my favorite of hers.

(18,646 posts)... they actually have similar range, but Joni emphasizes the high end and Karen the low end.
Can't go wrong with either, but my personal preference is for the lower register.

(23,781 posts)Male soloist: Tony Bennett
Group: This one is a tie Pink Martini, Steely Dan and Brave Combo. (and that is definitely an eclectic group there)
There are lots of amazing musicians out there .
Classical music in general but especially pianists I am obsessive when the Van Cliburn International competition is happening. Fortunately it is all on You Tube and there is a live stream.
Composer George Gershwin, hands down

(12,003 posts)If I had to, it would HAVE TO BE Steve Marriot. Just for this single performance. And as singer myself, I would sell my soul, commit murder, what have you to have his tone, his range, and his control. If this performance was all he ever did, my answer would be the same.
My biggest influences would make the hair on me arms stand up. So heres my other votes (along with they hair raising performances). As a singer, (or ex-singer anyway) ima gone list my top ten in no particular order .cept for Steve
Sir Roderick David Stewart
Sir Robert Anthony Plant
Brother Otis
Tina Turner
Chris Robinson
Ann Wilson
Michael Jackson (Good GOD this fucking kid! I spent my entire adult life borrowing, honing, dialing in my voice. He had it at 12. I hate him! LOL!)
Sam Cooke (with Jackie Wilson whos in my top twenty for sure!)
Paul Rogers
Of course there are at least another 20-30 that have been hugely influential on me. Van, Leon Russell, Howling Wolf, Hooker, Joe Cocker, brother Elton, etc. Plus some metal stuff from my early years. Don Dokken, Roth, Bruce Dickenson. But these are my top 10 that are always vying for the number 1 slot. Steve is never lower than 3 though, so he gets top honors.

a folk singer from Michigan who was mainly active in the 80s and 90s.
And if I had to pick a male singer, itd have to be the late Canadian baritone Stan Rogers (no relation to Sally).
Curiously, Im not much of a fan of folk music, but these two were standouts, IMHO.

(18,646 posts)Couldn't pick a "favorite," but the list goes something like this:
Karen Carpenter
Joni Mitchell
Annie Haslam
Sarah Vaughan
Ella Fitzgerald.

(28,908 posts)"Mother Russia", "Midas Man", "Ashes Are Burning"--just WOW!!!
There is a live performance of "Ashes Are Burning" on youtube. Renaissance didn't have a lead guitar, so they used Annie's amazing voice to replicate one--live!--and the result sent chills down my spine! She was a vocal dynamo!
Not to take anything away from Linda Ronstadt, Ann Wilson, Pat Benatar, Stevie Nicks, or anybody else, but Annie H. is the greatest!
malthaussen
(18,646 posts)... so she has stopped doing the solos at Renaissance concerts, even though her voice is pretty much up to them. The irony? They've replaced her with an electric guitar.
Renaissance didn't use electric guitars in the '70s because they felt that the tech of sound reproduction was not good enough for them. The tech has improved somewhat in the ensuing 50 years.

(2,572 posts)Especially female opera singers. Marian Anderson, Leontyne Price, Maria Callas. I am an opera lover, I go to several every year, and wow, opera singers, especially the female ones, can do some absolutely INCREDIBLE things with their voices.
