(43,765 posts)Remember the apostrophe police? I think they were mostly in the UK. It was a group of people who would go around with tape and correct signs that had incorrect possessives.
Wonder if they're still around and can do asterisk duty.

(8,471 posts)I, personally, am of the, comma police variety, myself. Commas make the difference between "Let's eat, kids" and "Lets eat kids"!!!

(7,360 posts)I used to teach remedial English to first year students whose writing skills were deficient entering their freshman year in college. I used this sentence in teaching about the importance of commas:
Where would you put the comma in this sentence? "God rest ye merry gentlemen."

One of my favourite examples gives insight into specific mindsets. How does one puncttuate this:
woman without her man is nothing
Sogo
(7,360 posts)because depending upon the meaning you wish to convey, it is a choice.
Your example is a good one....
My choice -
Woman: without her, man is nothing.
Cons would have us believe:
Woman, without her man, is nothing.

(5,327 posts)the asterisk police, the apostrophe police and the rest of them don't speak to each other. They're worse than Baptist Church sub-denominations.

(26,168 posts)and not very far into the book, she started giggling.
"What's so funny?"
"Oh, nothing." *gigglesnort*
I peeked at the book blurb later and didn't think too much of it, but I did remember the title. A few years on, I checked out 'Breakfast of Champions' from the library, probably the very same book, and knew exactly which page made her giggle and why she didn't want to explain it. Priceless.

(24,766 posts)Taco shells come in plastic bags, ten to the bag. Except for the crisp taco shells, which come in a box.
Rolled out? Like pizza dough? Are you sure they're not fried like crepes?
I guess I'll just put my trust in Carlos and his Mayan virgins.
