(14,093 posts)They really are magnificently sensitive and precise yet we don't often use them in ways that show it, unless we're digging for the right change in our pockets, or creating art.

(73,727 posts)1 reason she nails the lid is a)shes made that exact same pot hundreds of times, prolly and b)she uses measured blanks.
its a simple form, and tbh, 2 min is not that fast.
i used to do this, studied at saic w a clay major. we took a field trip to the haeger pottery. their master potter threw flower pots about 5x that size in 30 seconds, complete w a fancy lips and decorations.
i was not that fast, but then again, i wasnt making functional ware.
it is an amazing thing to watch, tho. 1st time i saw it my jaw dropped. i was an av aide at my community college and i was running a tv camera for a demo by the head of the art dept. and yes, he threw a half doz lidded pots in 5 min.

(61,033 posts)seem to get the clay centered on the wheel. Back then the wheel wasn't automatic, it had kick apparatus that you had to use your foot to keep the wheel turning.
Never could get the hang of it.

(73,727 posts)i used to use a motorized kick wheel. its nice for fine control, but as you say, tough to center.
do notice that her blank is also nice and symmetrical, well wedged, and easily centered.
im not trying to be a jerk, just giving a well informed opinion. i didnt say she was bad. just that its not that huge of a feat. almost every potter i know is this good on a bad day.
and if youve ever seen a chinese or korean production pottery shop, you would also be underwhelmed by this person.
what i hope my comments do is maybe inspire folks to go looking for some actually amazing potters. cuz theyre out there.

mopinko
(73,727 posts)i started messing around w thrown forms, altering them, infusing them w combustibles, making handbuilt lids. truly weird shit.
when i left school i did handbuilding at home and snuck it in, also weird forms. hi fire, atmospheric firings. the forms evolved into figures, which i also painted.
was in a coop studio for 5 yrs. epic fail, rly.
