How do they know what the rating should be for them?? How do they determine the strength??

They have machines that do this automatically. Most ophthalmologists and opticians use them.

If your retina is in focus to the machine, then the machine knows how good/bad your eyes are.

I, myself, am severely near-sighted. I had a photo of me at around 2 yrs old: with glasses.
But I have no memory that far back remembering actually getting them!
