Movie: "The Secret of Roan Inish"

I just watched this enchanting movie for the first time. "The Secret of Roan Inish is a 1994 independent fantasy-adventure film written and directed by John Sayles. It is based on the 1957 novel Secret of the Ron Mor Skerry, by Rosalie K. Fry. It is centered on the Irish and Orcadian folklores of selkies—seals that can shed their skins to become human."

In the movie, the girl and her family are Irish, but it looks like in the book it was taken from, "Secret of the Ron Mor Skerry," they are Scottish. Written by Rosalie K. Fry.

I was also unfamiliar with, "Selkies." Apparently, they are somewhat like mermaids. "Also called the seal people, or the mermaid – a selkie is a marine legend that tells of people who are half fish, and half-human. In the water, they are seals, but on land, they shed their skin and take on human form."

"A big difference between Selkies and Mermaids is that when selkies leave the water, they shed their seal skin and become fully human. This contrasts with the traditional mermaids who transform their seal tails into human legs. Selkies are much milder in personality than their mermaid or siren counterparts."

I am ordering the book, even if its more for kids!

Generally their animation is in English or with English subtitles. They have movies as well as individual songs.

…one of my mythological studies profs, and was just enchanted by it. Got the DVD and that’s part of my library since then. It’s a wonderful movie.
