Mine won't load security updates or win 11. Damn. I've owned Gateway, Dell, and Lenovo. Need advice. Thanks.

(113,973 posts)They were kind enough to replace the battery without charge (I brought the new battery with me) in my old struggling Lenovo. My local store has some knowledgeable people that don't push you into sales you don't want. And they have the "Geek Squad" that CAN be useful at times as well as some decent warranty extensions.
I've bought laptops online and saved quite a bit that way, but it sounds like you need something quickly.

(113,973 posts)quite a bit (open box, but new with same warranties) as does Best Buy Open box, which will ship from any store in the country that has it and you can specify the exact condition you will accept to get a new, yet opened model.
Others: Newegg.com, and sometimes direct from the manufacturer's own websites.

(22,915 posts)It's a few hundred less than best buy and amazon plus 2 year warranty and concierge help.
I can't update this laptop anymore and my security system just told me they can't either. Guess I've gotta give up and spend the bucks.
5 years doesn't sound old to me, but maybe that's my age speaking....

(62,150 posts)Deal of the Day at Best Buy (those seem to always be good prices), the second directly from Dell and I felt I overpaid but this was during the great laptop shortage just as remote classes were starting in September 2020.
Latest is an Acer Chromebook, another Deal of the Day from Best Buy.

(12 posts)Problem with this is, unless you are a sophisticated user looking for something special, what you really want to do is "feel" it before you buy it, and you can't do that with on-line.
For general use, Lenovo is almost never a bad choice.

(55,143 posts)If a model clears that, I shop price. Could be new, could be lightly used. I only buy from major retailers or sites. I'm not into 3rd party resellers on Amazon or Walmart, but I would buy new from either one. Best Buy the open box aren't available long enough to do much research. I buy a year or 2 behind the tech curve and tend to keep them till they drop.

(27,248 posts)I started him with Lenovos and now buy HPs. I was working a job recently doing a clearout of a lady who died and we had to get rid of the laptop I was able to refurbish and erase the computer so Ill have a backup for him.
I have 2 laptops that I rarely use. I use my desktop occasionally but use my IPAD the most now.

(985 posts)I run a business that is computer heavy.... signs and graphics, and buy from these guys exclusively. Refurbished off lease, fairly late model computers of all kinds... desktop, laptop, pads, etc. with a standard dell warranty. I've probably bought 10 of them of various sizes and types, with no issues.
Also, they occasionally send out specials via email, up to like 45% off of their already reasonable prices. I just purchased a laptop, i7 processor, 8 gig of ram, 256 gig SSD (solid state drive), with the Columbus Day discount, I think it was $260.
I wholeheartedly endorse them for what you're looking for.

(119 posts)I've found some mighty sweet deals down that road.
It's sort of like rummaging through someone's attic, but you will find working laptops with operating systems at low cost, And...
You won't get stuck with all sorts of crap you don't need and will end up uninstalling anyway.
Take your favorite PC guru with you... make it an outing.

(22,957 posts)Xidax is the only place I will purchase my computers. They have the very best customer service and they build a great machine. And their warranties can't be beat. Give them a try.
