She was 16 when Ritchie Valens died in 1959 in a plane crash at the age of 17.
He was Latino and she was white. High School sweethearts.
They dated but her father didn't like the idea that she was going out with a Latino and he forced her to stop seeing him. She would sneak out from the house to see him sing.
Her father made her record some songs after Ritchie Valens died to take advantage of his fame and that caused her to have a falling out with him.
Ritchie Valens story was very accurately portrayed in the 1987 move "La Bomba".

(61,631 posts)Me too .... their tour for that album was one of the first real rock n roll shows I ever went to. Alice Cooper , Cheech and Chong (!!!!!!) , and Redbone. Alice put on a great show, when he "hung" himself you could hear the whole place gasp as one. Nobody had seen anything even remotely like that at the time. Cheech and Chong were hilarious btw , did a bit making fun of TV commercials that had the whole place lol'ing. All that for $5 too lol.
