I am far too much of a tightwad to pay for the service, but my brother did and gave me his account details and password to link me to his account. We most likely have the same two parents, but you can never be sure. I thanked him by upgrading his subsription to the super-duper-premium status and then changed his password. Boy will he be surprised when it hits his card. (That is what brothers do)
I found most of the information to be worthless. On traits, I might have dark hair or I might have light hair, I might prefer sweet or salty... A blind county fair performer could have told me that for a dollar. I was a bit surprised to find out that I have more Neanderthal than most people (in the 61% range) I guess that explains my brow ridge, huge molars and desire to hit people that I don't like with a club. At least I come by it naturally.
They did show a first cousin that I had no idea that I had, but my uncle was somewhat of a ladies man, so that probably explains that. I don't have a lot of close family members that have signed up, probably because of our Scottish heritage. I did share a common ancestor with Louis XVI but I would never own up to that.
In the past I did a bit of family research that took my paternal history back to my Highlander roots. The history ends in 1066. I had learned that one of my direct ancestors was know as Sven Skullcrusher and was considered to be the "ultimate Viking." I am sure he was a nice guy once you got to know him. The old boy died in a raid on Dublin after leaving his seed behind. (thank dog) Sometimes, I get this overpowering urge to loot and burn a monastary, violate a nun, and impale small children on a pike, but I have fought it back successfully so far, and now my looting and pludering days are pretty much behind me. It is not a job for an old man.
The test results didn't indicate that I have many ancestors over there now, but then again, they too would be Scottish and not likely to pay for such nonesense.
I have a feeling that my brother bought the modern version of snake oil with the report, but it was still amusing to read.

(43,134 posts)Ok, but not half as amusing as your hilarious take on your family ancestry.

(37,628 posts)I figured we have the same parents so wed have the same genes. It doesnt work that way. We only share 48% of our genes. I knew he wasnt my real brother, we are half brothers. By the time you get to first cousins, you are lucky if you share 7% or 8%.
Im not a fan of looking for ancestry, lots of relatives I dont want to claim.
Dont do it.

(25,956 posts)genealogy at Ancestry for one side of my family that someone I never knew or heard of posted there. We shared a set of ggg-grandparents and the listing went as far into recent times as my g-grandmother. It went incredibly far back, too, to the 4th or 5th century CE, so somewhat dubious.
No Sven Skullcrusher, but there was an Olaf the Woodcutter. Supposedly the son of a 7th century Swedish king. Looked him up and there really was such a person. I like to say the name with a Swedish accent - Olaf da Voodcutter - with a question mark lilt at the end.

(15,352 posts)My father had and I, of course have an Irish surname. I'm Irish. Beyond that, never gave it much thought.
Until this stuff came up.
My grandfather (father's father) died in the Spanish flu, 1918. His surname and my father's birth certificate were German. Shortly after my grandfather died, my grandmother remarried an Irish Catholic. He explains to my father that your name is now, ... He was around three years of age so, yeah, my name is ......
My daughter traced this stuff and and found what should have been my German name.
Then, the 21 comes in. I am 15 or so %, Aryian. That would fit in with my German ancestry, 'cept Aryian is from the Indo-European, Indian sub-continent.
I don't know how Hitler's people came to the conclusion that a true German is Aryian.
