(18,828 posts)Ive got orders for 13 of them. I use dried pineapple, papaya, apricots, dates, and raisins instead of candied fruit and soak them in Capt Morgans Spiced Rum for a month.
Cant beat a nice big slice and a glass of homemade eggnog.

(29,732 posts)but I do have standards. If its dry or hard or full of nothing but candied citrus rind, Ill probably pass on it. Depends on how hungry I am.

(4,815 posts)We had a small family owned hardware store and at Christmas we sold Christmas trees, decorations, toys, and yes, fruitcakes. They always came in a round red tin. I loved the smell of the cakes but when it came to the taste it was a different story. My dad would always smile and say something to the effect that fruitcakes are a last resort present you buy for someone you don't know and will probably never see again.

(4,671 posts)then even tried making a few wrapped in cheesecloth and soaked in brandy. Recall making one once upon a time: a dark-colored cake w/dried apricots and cherries w/citron and nuts. I set to soaking as above until the Thanksgiving.feast I once hosted. Many family now departed so now my SIL does his family version of brined and brandied bird and stuffing -- and it's DELICIOUS! Alas, no fruitcakes of any kind in years; no one else would touch so it doesn't ever get bought or baked.

(13,032 posts)When you opened it, peeled back the cheesecloth the aroma that climbed into your soul through your nostrils quite literally made your shoulders slump slightly as you took in that first and glorious breath anticipating the taste of her wares.
Unfortunately the recipe and technique followed her into eternity.

(12,002 posts)They were great, even though she used the neon candied fruit. Alton Browns recipe uses dried fruits soaked in rum overnight. The finished cakes are spritzed with brandy periodically. Yum!
