I have followed DU for some time but just became able to post. Kind of feel like a spy behind enemy territory because I teach public education in a high school in the reddest part of South Carolina (hint Trump recently held a rally in our county). It saddens me that Democrats in places like SC often get forgotten. I have taught 40 years at my high school and one year in NC before that (65 years old). When people ask me when Im going to retire I keep telling them in about 10 years. I like to think of my classroom as a safe haven for kids. As long as I feel I am making a difference I will keep teaching.

(167,175 posts)The DNC bumped SC to the head of the line for "first in the nation primary" for 2024 (much to the chagrin of NH), so obviously not forgotten. James Clyburn (SC-6) and DNC Chair Jaime Harrison (SC native) were going to be certain of that.

PHILADELPHIA (AP) The Democratic Party on Saturday approved the reordering of its 2024 presidential primary, replacing Iowa with South Carolina in the leadoff spot as part of a major shake-up meant to empower Black and other minority voters critical to its base of support.
Although changes are still possible throughout the summer and beyond, the formal endorsement by the Democratic National Committee during its meeting in Philadelphia is an acknowledgement that the start of the 2024 primary will look very different from the one in 2020. States with early contests have a major influence in determining the nominee because White House hopefuls struggling to raise money or gain political traction often drop out before visiting states outside the first five.
The new plan has been championed by President Joe Biden, who is expected to formally announce his reelection campaign in the coming months. The reconfiguring would have South Carolina hold its primary on Feb. 3, followed three days later by New Hampshire and Nevada, which is swapping the caucus it used to hold in favor of a primary.
Georgia would vote fourth on Feb. 13, followed by Michigan on Feb. 27, with much of the rest of the nation set to vote on Super Tuesday in early March. The Democratic Party looks like America and so does this proposal, the party chairman, Jaime Harrison, said before the plan was approved. It elevates the backbone of our party, he said.

(1,916 posts)When so many teachers are so frustrated that they are finding new careers, (it's hard to blame them) you work far into retirement for the kids sake. That is kindness in the deepest sense. Thank you, for your gift to children and the world's future. 🙏
