A couple decades ago, I lived in Indianapolis. Our apartment was on the northeast side of town (Castleton for those familiar with the area). The Indianapolis 500 race is run in Racetrack on the southwest side of town. We could hear practice going on from miles away - and it was loud louder loudest! We decided to accept an invitation to spend Memorial Day with family who lived on a lake.
Well, I live near Las Vegas which is having an F1 race around The Strip for the next couple of days. Can anyone who is familiar with car races tell me just how loud this could get?
A couple other thoughts: I feel bad for people with pets and/or small children. If fireworks can frighten them, imagine the effect that zooming motor noises will have on them. It also strikes me as complete insanity to have cars racing as fast as they can in an urban setting full of drunk and stoned tourists. Of course TPTB have taken precautions and are doing their best to keep things as safe as possible, but it all just looks to me like a recipe for tragedy.
It hasn't started yet, but I would like to know if I need to find earplugs in order to sleep.
Thanks in advance.

(70,130 posts)... loudest thing I've ever heard inside an elevator car going to a floor in a high rise for an appointment. And that was during practices for the drivers, on a course where they had to slow down to 30mph to make city street corners.

(36,823 posts)For a couple of hours of loud noise, the crowds will brink millions of dollars into the local economy.
You might want ear protection if you are very close.

(298 posts)Earplugs are very cheap. You can get em from hardware stores, industrial suppliers, pharmacies/pharmacy sections, and sporting goods stores. They take 2 minutes to put in. There's virtually no good reason not to use them.

(2,453 posts)And with the F1 race being in the city itself, you might get some extra echo off the buildings.

(7,864 posts)It's been more than 20 years since I lived there. It was when Princess Di was killed and the Red Wings won the Stanley Cup. I shoulda looked at a map, though.

(13,711 posts)Did you hear them last night?. Get ear plugs at the hardware store or a motorcycle shop.

(7,864 posts)Didn't they stop or pause practice because of some bad road condition?
I'm home for the rest of the day now so I'll probably hear something when they start up again.

(4,407 posts)a few years ago. Each season of the show follows a season of F1 races and highlights the drivers, team principals, owners, etc. It's really entertaining and since watching the show I find myself watching a lot of F1 stuff on ESPN when it is on.
The actual Vegas race starts tomorrow night at 10 p.m. local time. Go Max!

(24,906 posts)They have 12,000 horsepower and accelerate from zero to over 330 mph in under four seconds. Their sound will make F1 sound like someone is cutting their lawn.

(7,864 posts)The company I worked for got employees free passes to see them drive and get into the center area (I don't know exactly what it was called) where we could see the cars up close and chat with drivers if they were available.
It struck me as funny that we could have conversations in the stands half the time. When the drivers were on the other side of the track, we could talk to each other. When they came around the bend to where we were sitting, all conversation stopped. Once the car passed around the bend again, we just picked up where we left off, usually in mid-sentence. My ears were ringing for days.
