(114,615 posts)They're 5-7 pounds of pure ferocity. If you tried to pet one, it would rip your arm off and beat you to death with it. It's the maximum amount of cattitude in one of the smallest packages.
Here's my favorite:
Yes, their pupils ar ound, unlike other cat species.

(60,186 posts)One summer morning many years ago, we noticed the net we had placed over our fish pond (so the herons wouldn't come help themselves to its inhabitants) had been shoved a few inches to the side. When we went out to straighten it, we nticed a slight disturbance on the surface of the water with a small stick sticking up in the middle. When we got closer, we saw the "stick" was the snout of a hedgehog that had fallen in, probably trying for a drink during the night. It was exhausted from trying to paddle its way to get air. We got a large net, and pulled it out of the water. It was so exhausted, it fell right asleep. We got a shoebox, and made it a little house. By nightfall, it had regained some strength and moved on. They are nocturnal, so you almost never see them, but they are everywhere.

(60,612 posts)She dropped him. I don't have to tell you what they did to the little boy. The display was closed permanently. I always felt that they had the cutest faces. There were all kinds of signs up NOT to go to the edge and Not to place children on ledge.Sad story.
debm55
(60,612 posts)milestogo
(23,084 posts)They hunt in packs which can have over 20 dogs - this allows them to attack much larger animals as a group and take down a buffalo or a giraffe. They are known to steal pups from other female's litters in order to form a larger pack.
They are endangered because of diseases common to domesticated dogs such as distemper and rabies. I also saw them at a sanctuary in South Africa where they were trying to revive the population.
Very cool looking, and very dangerous. I'd sooner cuddle a lion than a painted dog - the later will invite their friends to feast on you.

(10,988 posts)I feed them and usually get visited by my regulars every day (around 4) but Ive had 50 ravens at once around my fish pond. Ive had ravens come inside when grandkids left door open. They love mirrors and can damage a place in 5 minutes. When they are not flying and walk around in little groups, they remind me of mini penguins.
My friend a few miles south of me feeds the feral hogs families. She has named them all and they eat out of her hand. We are all treated to their photos on Facebook. Not my thing - but the baby hogs are really cute.
When the coyotes come by at dusk, my dogs run out to their very large run - and my dogs and the coyotes howl at each other. It can go on for five minutes. I love it.
Its the great plus of living out in the country. Im not into rats and they mess with my car wires, but fuzzy wood rats are totally adorable.

Easterncedar
(6,267 posts)Gorgeous; they look ungainly but move so smoothly. According to a state biologist, they may be extinct in Maine in a few decades due to ticks, which breaks my heart. I used to see them fairly often. Rare now.
Bobcats and Canada lynx are great. I saw one lynx in the wild last year, which was thrilling. Coyotes and foxes and fishers and least weasels are wonderful too. Do I have to pick a favorite?
debm55
(60,612 posts)in SW PA , we have fox, wolves and coyotes, More toward the center of the state there are mountain lions and bobcats. Have a great day for a happy Thanksgiving.
