People thought he was crazy. He was not.

(39,179 posts)decision was the last straw. People thought Zappa was a left-wing nut, now they worship an insane
want to be dictator.

(6,956 posts)He's been my hero and helped shape my values from the October 16, 1971 Stony Brook late show to the present. To eastern Europeans he represented everything that was great with America. He was proud to be an American "Constitutional Fundamentalist. He debated PMRC Members anywhere any time any place for any reason at all. It was remarkable who his friends were; Vaclev Havel, Al and Tipper, Linda Ellerbee, Daniel Schorr, Stan Lee, Don Vliet and many others. Even Rachel Maddow ("......the great Frank Zappa."
played a clip of his humiliation of Paula Hawkins at the PMRC Hearings. He testified live to the senate which were all gunning against him. He survived an "assassination attempt" where a deranged fan pushed him head first into an orchestra pit and he barely survived and was in a wheel chair for the next nine months. The week prior he was playing at MOntrose and was onstage where "some stupid with a flare gun burnt the place to the ground. He was on stage talking to the audience to prevent a stampede. (which has happened at other rock shows, 6? people died at a Who Concert in Cincinnati mid 70's?) He sued Warner Bros. and won. He was warned of an impending assassination attempt for his 88 tour Hartford shows, but played two shows, albeit backstage passes were canceled. He was doing feasibility studies about running for president but his prostate cancer shut that down. He was good at self promotion and sent out press releases constantly. He owned a recording studio in Cucamonga, purchased from electronics expert paul Buff. The original song "Wipe Out" was recorded there.

(11,277 posts)...with Nixon's Southern Strategy. Racists then evangelicals. Now throw in unlimited money and sophisticated disinformation (+AI) allowed by M$M - and the toxic mix either wins or takes a generation to put back under the rug. Climate change is not the only pile of shit we're leaving for our kids.

(18,629 posts)Well, not so much warned, as revelled in it. His Playboy interview is really quite prescient, though. He just had the timing off, and expected to be the Leader.

Kick in to the DU tip jar?
This week we're running a special pop-up mini fund drive. From Monday through Friday we're going ad-free for all registered members, and we're asking you to kick in to the DU tip jar to support the site and keep us financially healthy.
As a bonus, making a contribution will allow you to leave kudos for another DU member, and at the end of the week we'll recognize the DUers who you think make this community great.
