My father died in uniform and my son is an army pilot so this brings some thoughts to my mind when I hear it.
This song has a Civil War feel to it, though it wasn't written until 1899. There were probably few long, white caskets during the civil war. I think technically it's an old timey song, though it's mostly covered by blue grass artists today.
Best regards,

Lyrics:
When my race on this earth is run
When I take one final trip
When I fly into the horizon
When my body has lost its grip
Won't you think of me in a good light
Won't you think of me with a smile
Won't you think of me by the water
Won't you think of me once in a while
When the spell is finally broken
And the magic has long gone
When I drift into the other side
When I've sung my final song
Won't you think of me in a good light
Won't you think of me with a smile
Won't you think of me by the water
Won't you think of me once in a while
When my head rejects my body
When my arms don't know my legs
And my fingers aren't doing any good no more
And my mouth spits only dregs
Won't you think of me in a good light
Won't you think of me with a smile
Won't you think of me by the water
Won't you think of me once in a while

(13,032 posts)Youll appreciate this Prayer Of the Woods. We say this prayer as we hike in the forest.
Tony Dekker is a gift
his Band is Great Lake Swimmers. Weve seen them in live concerts very small intimate venues
maybe 100-150 people. These are from Tonys solo album.
Lyrics:
I am the heat of your hearth on the cold winter nights
The friendly shade screening you from the summer sun
As you journey on
I am the beam that holds your house
The board of your table
The bed on which you lie
And the timber that builds your boat
Those who pass by
Listen to my prayer: Harm me not
I am the handle of your hoe
The door of your homestead
The wood of your cradle
And the shell of your coffin
I am the bread of kindness
And the flower of beauty
Those who pass by
Listen to my prayer: Harm me not

(3,017 posts)Although one of my hobbies is building string instruments, I am not musical. I can plunk out that song on a dulcimer. This delighted my wife when we were first married, and it became Our Song. On the many occasions that Patty was hospitalized, I'd bring a dulcimer in and play it for her...amusing the nursing staff hugely in the process.
This past Tuesday was the thirteenth anniversary of her death. It was her merciful release from a lifetime of chronic illnesses. God, I miss her.
I still tear up when I hear the song.

Some songs still after 50 years can bring back where I was at the time. and I do feel a tinge of sadness. But I have found my true soulmate and able to love myself. I hope you know that it hurts but love will come again.
