I was stationed at Minot AFB in North Dakota in 1961. Young Airmen were pretty popular with all the school girls in Minot. I was always looking at them but didn't know what to say to them I was so shy. While out walking one Thanksgiving, a the most beautiful redheaded girl I had ever seen, asked me to come in and she would make me a turkey sandwich. She said her parents had gone to visit their grandmother. When I went in, her young brother was sick and had to throw up so I held his head up while he vomited and I paid more attention to him than I did her but that seemed OK with her and I got a few wet kisses before I hitch hiked back to the base. Next, I met her parents and fixed a lot of stuff in the house and I got along good wiith them too. The snow was so bad they had me sleep in a spare room rather than trying to get back to the base. Months later I asked for permission to marry their daughter and they approved.
After 20 years on Active Duty, life just got better if that was possible. We moved several times suring that career and our favorite was Ramey AFB in Puerto Rico. On September of this year, we celebrated 60 years of marriage. She is an incredibe woman and we raised our daughter and two sons that we are proud of. I am an active 82 years old and I consider myself to be the luckiest man alive.

(60,170 posts)A lot of long-lasting DU couples met under the most trivial, coincidental circumstances, including yours truly.
There seems to be something magical in that formula.

(266 posts)And I look forward to telling our story in a (very) few years. We are facing the big 50, and I don't know what I would do without my wiser and better half.
Congratulations on making 60, and I hope you have many more years together. (If you think like me, you're hoping she won't come to her senses)

(62 posts)What a wonderful story. My wife and I grew up in the same neighborhood and attended the same church. I was 20 and she was 19 when we married 51 years ago. The best decision I ever made. While she is not red-headed, I've always found red-headed women attractive. Lucky me, one of our granddaughters has gorgeous red hair!

(31 posts)I worked for the Air Force in 1961 at the Minot AFB in Base Supply. Although I am also a redhead, unfortunately I wasn't lucky enough to meet you, 40RatRod! Oldest daughter was born at the AFB hospital. Now am 81 years old, so this seems as if it was an eternity ago!
