(22,727 posts)When I was a youngster, the old incandescents were all you could get. They'd get hot enough for tinsel to melt and stick to the bulbs. Then mini, mini's came out and the old, ancient incandescent strings never left the Christmas box. Dad couldn't bring himself to throw them away. Too many memories.
My parents grew up with actual candles on the tree. Actual freaking candles! They'd light them, marvel at the tree for a bit, then quickly blow them out before they burned down the house.

(1,471 posts)Sometimes, the tree looks so beautiful with just the white lights, I am tempted not to put anything else on the tree!
But, I always put on my favorite Christmas ornaments!

(12,121 posts)Our now deceased cat chewed on the branches and got sick while bringing the pieces of the branches back up.
Anyway, I specifically purchased an unlit Christmas tree so that I can change it up every year. I'm not a big fan of fiber optic or pre-lit trees.
This year I have multicolored lights and the 150 set strand came with 16 different settings. I've been changing the settings every day so that is does something different every day.
Next year, I might do a Victorian themes Christmas tree with strands of warm white lights. Try saying that 3 times fast.

(61,684 posts)my style. I have an alpine tree with red lights and little sweater, socks and caps I knitted.

It feels like a change of season for me! 🎄

(61,684 posts)swithch colors they sound very neat. Having them up in January is a nice touch also. We would celebrate my late Fathers Christmas in January. ----Three Kings Day. Then we would take it down.

(100,133 posts)Decades ago I saw a stack of faux trees in the craft store. They were made of some kind of vine, woven into a conical shape, sprayed gold. Light and airy, different heights I chose one under 4 just right to put on a table, and wound the lights around it.
Its perfect to put all my ornaments on in December. No guilt about a plastic tree, and no pine needles all over the place from a real tree.
Jingle Bells! Deck the Halls!

I have a remote where I can change the color and effects. When I get bored with one, I change it. Previously I had blue flash then red then multi.
Gonna go with red and green when it gets closer to Christmas. It's fun.

(23,757 posts)When we put up a large tree, we alternated multi and white strings on the tree and strung them along the top of the branches all the way to the tip. One string of white, followed by a string of multi. It made for a beautiful tree.
Before I married Mr YD my tree was all white: lights, some white ball type ornaments with the rest of the ornaments clear glass. Some years I put silver beads on it for garland. It was gorgeous. However Mr YD likes color so we compromised. My door wreath however has only white lights.
We do not always do it but we like red lights on the outdoor shrubbery in front of the house. I got new ones this year because the old ones are dying.

(25,126 posts)Weve accumulated numerous strands of lights. Gold, blue, white and multi-colored. We choose the light based on nothing more than our feelings at decoration time. This year, one tree has reddish-orange lights and the other has multi-colored strands.
