(1,230 posts)Shhhhhh. Deep in the mountains of western North Carolina.
Farmed tomatoes and tobacco and dairy cows, built a little church in his community and led the shape note singing there.
Helped raise my husband when his daddy ran off, leaving his mom and his little brother and him behind with next to nothing.
Now WNC has a gazillion breweries and brew pubs, several specializing in moonshine.
And there are dispensaries all over the place selling all manner of legal hemp-derived products.
Some will even ship it right to your home.
Times sure have changed since I came of age, and times will continue to do so.
Cest la vie.
Im in for the long haul, spirit willing and the creek dont rise.

(1,230 posts)Its just me and my sweetie and our sweet Molly dog basking in the warmth of the wood stove this evening about to eat some leftovers from yesterdays Chinese feast with the kids, and maybe watch a movie, maybe play some backgammon. Its our traditional Jews on Christmas festivities.
Thanks for asking all your questions, dear Deb, and building community in the Lounge.
Thank you for your support and encouragement and your friendship.
May all who read here have Peace, sweet Shalom, Love and Light, and Music,

(60,619 posts)with me and my family. Last year they somehow decided there would be no gifts as if was not their birthday. but Jesus". No one told me and I was accused of being a do gooder for sending 100 dollars, a card. and a hand written message. You know what. I sent an empty Hallmark and gave the 100 to Children's Hospital in Pittsburgh. They called today and left a message on where the money was. I didn't return the call. Why call me, it's not my birthday? I hate to be snarky, but sometimes people have to learn that words have meaning. You made the right decision. OH, my ears are burning , they must be complaining about me.

(7,921 posts)Just reminds me how far the different members of this extended family have drifted apart.
It's important to the wife, so I play along - days of cooking, etc.
There are so many of them, yet the contact during the year is minimal.
Often down to a cry for 'I want, I need. You got money, help me out!'.
Then some of you get together at Xmas day, act like you only spoke a week ago, be all jovial, bring and eat too much food, then go home and . . . donno, just makes me feel sad.
If you had a great time over Christmas, great. But don't assume it is the same for everyone.
(Somehow, I feel better and less guilty now, for typing that.)

(60,619 posts)daughter in life and death, make both the pit of laughter at a funeral and really their whole lives and expect it to change magically in one day. Then go back to the vulgar name calling, Doesn't work that way with me. Treat me with love and respect all year round. Check the forum out and my posts on it. You posted to me the other day on it. I have other posts too. I understand what you are saying all too well my friend. And I am glad you stood up and spoke your mind to me. Be at peace. I have gone through alot.

(39,086 posts)Monday Tuesday and Wednesday we had our Christmas Thursday. Christmas was over for me today and it was 62 degrees and partly cloudy, so I went on a 20-mile bicycle ride. Saw a few more bikers and lots of walkers and got a picture of a Bald Eagle.

(60,619 posts)you watched the Eagle Cam online? I know where you biked. Right along the river. So calm and peaceful. May the rest of your holiday season be relaxing and your New Year be filled with love and health.

(4,123 posts)I'll never be a grandma; my daughter has the genetic kidney disease PKD, or polycystic kidney disease. Any kids could inherit the disease, plus a pregnancy could seriously harm her kidney function. We enjoy our fur kids and spend time with our friends kids. At least with kids belonging to our friends, we can send them home if they get naughty
