(2,560 posts)Deb, apparently you're not a tennis fan. Djokovic might be the greatest player in the history of his sport, but I hate his guts because of his anti-vac attitudes. During Covid he was denied entry to some countries because he wouldn't get his shots. He might have won another two or three Grand Slam tournaments had he just gotten his damn shots. He was actually deported from Australia once for not getting vaccinated and thus not allowed to enter the Australian Open. I wish they would ALL deny the SOB entry until he gets his damn shots. Especially the Grand Slam countries: Australia (Australian Open), France (French Open), U.S. (U.S. Open) and England (Wimbledon).

(3,647 posts)He was quite the guitar player and his voice was exquisite. Ive read that he had perfect pitch. One of the best concerts was just him and his guitar, no band.
Actor? Harrison Ford. Had a crush on him since Star Wars.

Id add Johnny Carson to the list. At humor-on-the-fly, and wry social commentary, he was unsurpassed.
The Beatles as a group.
Pablo Picasso as a visual artist.
Actor - Spencer Tracy, Sidney Poitier, or maybe Dustin Hoffman.
Actress - either Bette Davis or Julie Harris (or both).
But my list could be all different tomorrow

(2,560 posts)The greatest composer of all time. The third, sixth, seventh and ninth symphonies. All of the piano concertos. The violin concerto. The triple concerto, oh wow, yes, the triple concerto.
Bette Davis, the greatest film actress ever.
Isaac Asimov, the greatest science-fiction novelist of all time. Certainly the most prolific. Here's something unique about Asimov: Every writer I've ever heard comment on the subject of the difficulty or ease of writing claims that it is really hard. My father was a poet and he often remarked that it is "one percent inspiration and 99 percent perspiration." I met Larry Niven once at a science fiction convention and he said "I sweat blood" when writing. Others I have heard make similar claims that indicate that it is a really hard thing to do that requires lots of effort. The ONLY author I've ever heard claim that writing is "easy" for him is Asimov. And that claim is believable when you consider the sheer volume of the man's work. It's really good science fiction too, especially the Foundation and robot novels.

(11,396 posts)He is a triple threat. Actor, Singer, Dancer (which, these days, also references someone who is 'stunt-capable').
I always liked the character actors. Especially the ones who made a great career out of it. People like Richard Lynch, Danny Trejo, Lance LeGault, Mads MIkkelson, the legendary Geoffrey Lewis, The immortal Ted Cassidy, etc. They were the real actors in that they were playing people who were NOT like them... at all in some cases. They made a life out of being the performing equivalent of a Gerber multi-tool. I wanted to be like them very badly when I was convinced I had a shot at being a successful performer.
Silly me, eh?

(7,869 posts)Amazing performer who could act, sing and dance.
Followed by:
Actor: Bogart
Actress: Meryl Streep. Is there an accent in which she cant speak? Also, her performance in the biopic about Florence Foster Jenkins was phenomenal. Apparently she accurately reproduced the off-key vocals of Jenkins. How hard is that?
Singer:
Linda Ronstadt: Multi Grammy winner in multiple genres. Phenomenal.
Bing Crosby.
Comedian: Lucille Ball
Dancer:
Fred Astaire
Gene Kelly

(25,090 posts)That's a tough one, deb. Also, "favorite" vs. "most respected" figures into the calculation.
For example, Barbra Streisand is a great singer, dancer, actor, director, writer and more. One of the best ever. But she's not my "favorite."
How about Leonard Bernstein? He was an accomplished pianist, composer, conductor, author, lecturer, educator, social commentator and TV star. But again, for me, not my "favorite" of any one of those talents but to find all of them in one person is amazing.
Here are some monsters (in the best sense!): Harrison Ford, Robin Williams, Tina Turner, Sinead O'Connor, John Lennon, Bob Dylan, Mikhail Baryshnikov, Joni Mitchell, Bono, Paul Newman, Ru Paul, Taylor Swift and I could keep going with all of the talents I've enjoyed. There's just too many wonderfully talented people!
There's no way I can choose just one.
I think I've over-thought this one.
debm55
(61,251 posts)but what the hell. Posters enjoy it. I enjoy your post also. Thank you for pointing that out to me.
As I wrote, I probably over thought the idea.
Here's mine, pulled out of the hat:
Merv Griffin or maybe Lawrence Welk
Bear with me.
They were both supremely talented musicians who were also serious businessman. Early on, they realized how to make money in the entertainment business. Not only that, but they were supremely successful in their endeavors.
For example, in addition to his daytime talk show, Merv Griffin had a production company that produced such TV shows as Jeopardy and Wheel Of Fortune. Not bad for a musical crooner.
Lawrence Welk had an early variety show that dominated early TV entertainment.Mr. Welk (as I referred to him when my great-grand parents made me watch his shows when I stayed with them!), had a publishing business, a record company and a production firm. Although he presented himself as an everyday guy from Minnesota, he was a successful monster in the music business.
I never much liked their music (or entertainment!) but I respect their successes.
