I don't have any gripes about those going to or throwing a party on New Years.
But I will be at home, nice and warm, with my two feline furbabies, and if I'm still awake at midnight, I'll be here at DU.
I don't drink, and I really just plain don't like parties, I get bored quicky.
This afternoon, I'm going to my oldest sister's house for a late Christmas party, with dinner and a white elephant exchange, that always ends up with people getting the giggles.

(7,078 posts)Turns out the area my father took me to was an industrial park. I was driving slowly and they thought we might be casing the area since there had been some break ins.
Taught my sister to drive. In the Phoenix area. When a storm came through I dragged her out to a large parking lot and had her do some panic stops, hard accelerations and turns. When she moved to a wetter and snowier climate she thanked me. Panic stops were much more fun with drums all around that lock wheels up at slightly different times.

Can't stand being around drunks, don't want to be out driving on Amateur Night.
Of course, I won't have to decide whether or not to go to a party; when you get to be my age you don't get invited to much of anything.

(2,393 posts)New Year's Eve is a faux celebration that we enjoyed when much younger. I remember doing a hotel deal back when we were dating (been married 35 years so this quite awhile ago). The liquor was the cheapest McCormick rotgut but we drank it anyway. We had a lot of fun.
I do drink, but my capacity for heavy drinking is just not there anymore. The pain outweighs the pleasure.
If there was a party next door (within walking distance) I'd be there. Alas, there aren't any party houses inhabited by our friends and acquaintances.

(4,671 posts)Always At Home: the ball drop in NYC: Some better years-- a less expensive matinee or the early evening movie in the theater near you, a veggie heavy choice of Chinese take-in, an adult sip of whatever w/a toast; a kiss, and phone calls wishes. We're retired now and hit the hay earlier; this year DH, who still works FT by necessity, has a regularly scheduled day off on Tuesday as well (Monday and Tuesday are our weekend). If you go out, stay safe; don't drink and drive!
I host the family dinner for 6 on New Year's Day (always pork and sauerkraut) and maybe TV Rose Bowl parade and football) while I anticipate the removal of the holiday decor hoopla, inside and out, ASAP thereafter (day, time, and variable weather permitting because it requires a ladder.)

since getting plastered on NYE and waking up with nauseated regrets the next day seem to be the point.
First Night in Boston years ago was fun, I'd visit the venues I was interested in and leave when people started puking on the sidewalk, usually by 10. There was lots of dancing with total strangers, great music, street food. There were always people selling lumpia, Philippine egg rolls that are out of this world good.
Here in NM, the frantic college crowd fills the bars and families throw parties, all of which is capped off by fireworks that drunks keep shooting off until 3 AM. Then it's back to back football through bleary eyes and it's over for another year.
At least there isn't another bloody turkey to cook on New Year's Day. It's finger food and sandwiches when the football obsessed are over the hangover enough to eat. Or bowls of menudo. Drunk food.
Mostly, I'm glad that being old now allows me to skip most holidays. The independent living facility has decent sound insulation, so I might even get to sleep before 4 AM. That will be OK.
I miss all the fun.

I've not met this man yet, so am pretty sure I will not know anyone at this party. My husband got an email yesterday promising "lots of fun and games" at this gathering.
2 of my least favorite things, to the point of actually despising them, are being in a group of people where I know no one, and party games, especially those designed to make you look awkward or ridiculous, which seems to be most of them.
So, this is not something I am looking forward to in any way. My husband says he's not feeling well today. Maybe he will feel worse tomorrow and we can stay home.

(7,864 posts)It's hard enough to drive at night for me - my town (Las Vegas NV), in their infinite wisdom, has decided to install non-reflective cat's eyes to mark lanes on the roads. Even during the day it's difficult to find your lane - even on my closest most familiar roads. It's next to impossible not to drift into another lane sometimes.
Not only that, this weekend is one of the biggest tourist draws of the year. New Year's Eve is celebrated by drinking lots'n'lots of alcohol. No, thanks. We're staying home.
On the plus side, I can watch NYE shows on broadcast TV, ring in the new year, and be in bed by 9:15pm. One of the best perks of living in the Pacific Time Zone.

(19,458 posts)The only New Years Eve parties I've been to in the last two decades were for work.
This one is a reunion gig with the band I ran sound for until they broke up. I then retired. We did mostly weddings on the east coast. The lead singer moved to Spain and the drummer went to Australia. I don't really have to work as my younger brother will be lead on this. I'm likely to leave before it gets crazy.
It is going to be great to see the guys. Some of these musicians have done a lot of studio work and some have toured with famous artists.
I never go out on New Year's Eve. All the crazies are out there drinking and driving. I'll stay home and spend time watching TV and contacting family to wish them a Happy New Year - IF I'm still awake at Midnight! LOL

(12,582 posts)I stay home, and would prefer if my kids stayed at home with us and my future DIL stayed at home with her family. NYE has been the cause of numerous panic attacks through my lifetime, starting when I was really young.
My dad was a fireman/ambulance chief and Id hear him discuss the most horrendous calls he had to go on over the holidays. And he would always have to go out especially on Xmas and NYs eves. On Xmas, it was mainly fire calls and on NYE a lot of accidents involving drunk drivers.
Its been a rough holiday season this year for me anyway trying to deal with my brothers depression, the fact hes a creepy perv, his total inability to handle money, and provide a Christmas/meals, etc. for he and his family while Ive been recovering from abdominal surgery and a few other issues. Giving him money is like pouring water down a rathole, so Ive been providing them with meals (both home cooked and DoorDash) groceries, and gift cards.

This year, the Alabama in laws are in Pasadena here for the Rose Parade, and are coming down to watch the game on our bigger screen because the tickets were too expensive for even the cheap seats and our food is better.
Apparently my New Year's hopping John, Collard Greens, hoecake biscuits, catfish ceviche (for those allergic to shellfish) and 7 layer dip are better than what they can get there without going to the relative that's an Auburn Fan who has all the old family recipes. And I'm a California girl....
I didn't have the heart to tell them I learned to cook by taste and smell, and between that, my great-grandmother's old cards/grandmother's 1920's home ec books, and science - and with one taste of the grandmother's cooking, I could figured out how she did it. I also have a lot of my great grandmother's pots and cooking utensils, and I know how to use them.
The Catfish Ceviche is already made and marinating to full effect. The beans are finishing their soak.
