The DU Lounge
Related: Culture Forums, Support ForumsSo I am laying in bed with my two dogs in our new house.
My wife is in Spokane visiting family. The new house is nice and quiet, although small. (500 sq ft) The electrical power won't be hooked up for another week or so, so we ar running on a generator. I bought an Amazon mobile WiFi hot spot, so the internet is working great. After a hectic few weeks, and leaving our old house ten weeks ago, I just need some quiet time to decompress. I'll be going back to our daughter's house on Tuesday when her and my wife return from Spokane. Then probably back here in the new house next weekend, hopefully for good. It's been a long journey.

(24,906 posts)lots of unpacking and getting rid of things because of the downsizing, but I think I will enjoy the results.

(12,126 posts)Take time to relax and enjoy your new home.
Did you two have to downsize and was it difficult to do? It was easy for me to depart with items in my younger age, but now in my older age I finding it's not so easy to part with my possessions.
Mr.Bill
(24,906 posts)so we are at least experienced at it. About eight years ago, we went from 1600 sq ft to about an 800 sq ft mobile home. We thought that was our last move, but kids and grandkid's career moves took them to about 175 miles away from us. We know it will be best to be near family as we enter our 70s. The new place in a manufactured home on my grandson's five acre property. We will be renting from him. Every thing is brand new and maybe it will outlast us. There are two of our great grandchildren, aged five and six living on the property. It will be fun to watch them grow.

(1,445 posts)My husband and I are seniors and currently our house is too much for us. Have looked to move but options are tough. Did you buy your manufactured home and just put it on some land then?
How are you finding hook up costs going forward?
Mr.Bill
(24,906 posts)because my grandson is actually the one who owns it. I gave him some input on what our basic needs were, then he handled it form there.
The whole idea of manufactured homes was they are supposed to be faster than having one built on site. It didn't go that way for us. Problem #1 was the pandemic supply chain problems delayed the building of it for months. Then weather problems delayed the transport from Oregon to Northern California, because heavy snowfall last winter kept roads closed.
Then when it was finally brought here, it sat on a storage lot for months because of County red tape on permits and site inspections. Then when it was finally delivered the contractor setting it up moved very slowly, and had more permit and inspection delays.
The way these guys work is, they have multipple projects going at the same time. That way, if there are delays on some project, they have other ones to go work on. We were able to roll with all these delays because it took nine months to sell our mobile home. When it finally sold in October, we had a relative we could stay with and stored out stuff in our grandson's garage. All in all, what was presented to us as a three month timeline from start to move-in by the salesman has been more than a year.
To summarize, consider having a local contractor just build something for you from existing plans you can purchase. If you do go for a mobile or manufactured home, research your set-up contractor and get references.
Our situation was not an outlier. In the mobile home park we lived in the home next to ours was destroyed in a fire. With demolition, waiting for a new one to be built then set-up, the fire was in september of 2021 and the home is still not move-in ready.

(27,689 posts)You sound happy and confident about your decision and I hope it is everything youve planned for. I often think about doing the same..Ill be 77 in February and me and my kitty have accumulated too much stuff we dont need. Downsizing sounds like a smart move at this point in life both financially and emotionally. Best wishes for a healthy and Happy New Year, Mr Bill

(24,906 posts)My grandson has a Maine Coon cat that nocturnally patrols the five acres. He has been known to bring dead rattlesnakes home and leave them on the porch. He goes out every night then when he returns at daybreak you can tell how the hunting was by how much cat food he eats. He loves to play with our dogs, too.
