A female doctor is talking about crotch odor. My drs told me rinse with warm water. That is all the "cleaning" female genitals need. Sad a female dr is saying this, but she's getting rich from Lume.

Very unprofessional presentation.

(11,536 posts)So those lazy asses out there can skip that shower or bath. This is a major money industry. And, all of it is to pander to lazy, stinky people who would rather spend lots of time and money on ways to avoid being clean as opposed to just getting in the damned shower once in a while.

(114,667 posts)Her unprofessional discourse and untenable claims (for obvious profit) have really rankled others in the OB/GYN field. It won't change anything, of course, albeit I've noticed her more recent ads are using another as the spokesperson or she's toned down the "pits and butt crack" language--thrown about as though she was auditioning for Pornhub.
But yes, soap and water with thorough rinsing-- over any chemical-laden product-- is what any reputable physician would recommend unless there is a specific pathogen that needs to be cleared/treated.

(1,312 posts)a female gynecologist as the speaker. Someone asked this question in the Q and A portion. The doc said to use soap and water only on the outside followed with a thorough rinse, and wash with plain warm water on the inside. She said all the douches and genital deodorants on the market were unnecessary.
Has anyone seen the commercial for body deodorant for seniors? I dont remember the brand. It said that seniors exude a peculiar odor but are unable to smell it so they need the special senior deodorant. What a racket!!

(5,166 posts)Clean isn't the problem. Keeping the area dry is the problem.
If you wash your armpits and don't use deodorant, you may develop an objectionable underarm odor because the area becomes moist during the day. Your sweat glands cause your pits to provide a perfect area for bacteria to develop--damp, dark, enclosed by your arms and your clothing.
For some women, the same thing happens with their crotches. They can wash themselves till the cows come home, but if their sweat glands produce moisture, like our armpits do--same kind of environment, dark, enclosed--so it can't dry out on its own, the bacteria that grow there will cause an odor.
Traditionally, women with this problem have used talcum powder after bathing to keep the area dry, but we now know that talcum powder used in the genital region of women *and babies* is associated with ovarian cancer and is no longer recommended by gynecologists. A deodorant is a solution for women with this problem; they no longer have to use a carcinogen to deodorize themselves.
I suspect that this product is designed for women who are younger than many of the women posting here, women who wear tight pants, who exercise heavily, who are vigorously sexually active--who engage in activities and wear clothing that would tend to work up a good crotch sweat. I'm 76 and don't have this problem (soap and water work fine for me, too), but if I did, I'd be grateful for a product that wouldn't expose me to a cancer-causing agent.

(34,852 posts)I do use Vagisil as opposed to soap, because Vagisil pH balanced.
I was using soap, but I eventually found it drying and irritating.

(5,166 posts)and a little embarrassing, and who knows how well the product worked, but I'm glad to see the issue addressed.
J&J have lost so many lawsuits over their baby powder and ovarian cancer that I'm surprised J&J hasn't come out with their own version of this er product.
