There are lots of others. The first two Taken movies, A League of Their Own, The Poseidon Adventure, Forbidden Planet (the best science fiction movie ever made, IMHO), Invasion of the Body Snatchers (1956 and 1978), War of the Worlds (1950s version, NOT that awful remake), The Fly (1958 version, NOT that awful remake), The Day the Earth Stood Still (1951 version, NOT that awful remake), Double Indemnity (the best film noir ever, IMHO), A Tale of Two Cities (1935 version), Mutiny on the Bounty (1935, won Best Picture), the first three Star Wars movies, The Heiress (Olivia de Havilland's best movie, IMHO), Dr. Strangelove, The Parent Trap (1961 and 1998 versions), Ben-Hur (won 1959 Best Picture), The Ten Commandments (1956 version), Samson and Delilah, most of Greta Garbo's talkies, National Velvet (Elizabeth Taylor's best movie, IMHO), Django Unchained, 12 Years a Slave, Casablanca, Citizen Kane, Wuthering Heights, Johnny Belinda, The Miracle Worker, Planet of the Apes (1969 original), Metropolis, My Fair Lady, Sabrina (Audrey Hepburn version), Roman Holiday, the first two Alien movies, Amadeus, The Wizard of Oz (the first movie I remember ever watching, I was 5 when I saw it on TV in 1955), LOTS of others, I could go on and on ...

(2,560 posts)That's why it was at the top of my mind when I made this list. I hadn't seen it in a long time but I quickly discovered how compulsively watchable it is. Jane Wyman deserved her Best Actress Oscar.
I think that when Hollywood re-makes a classic old movie, they too often forget what made it a classic. They start taking all sorts of liberties with it and ruin it. The same thing when they make a great novel into a movie. "Jumper" by Steven Gould is a great novel, I've read it several times and could not put it down, it is so much fun, but when they made that pathetic movie a few years ago they took all kinds of liberties with it and ruined it. They took all the fun out of it.
If they would just remember why the original was so good, they could make it into a great movie. They did that with "The Martian". They stayed mostly true to that great novel and therefore it made a great movie.

(28,493 posts)Personally, I think the movie "Twelve Monkeys" is the most science-fictional movie ever, by which I mean it sticks to the s-f tropes and doesn't wander off into Hollywood-land.
I grew up reading science fiction, and am generally not impressed with movie or (worse yet) TV s-f. The problem is that the movies and shows are written by people who absolutely know how to write the scripts, but seem to have rarely, if ever, read any actual science fiction. Sigh.

You arrogant ass! You've killed us! - I think when it gets confused, it kind of runs home to mama. - Give me a ping, Vasily. One ping only. - The hard part about playing chicken is knowing when to flinch. - I would like to have seen Montana. - Make like a hole in the water.
A close second is Chocolat.

I read an article on how they did the underwater submarine scenes. They were models, of course, but they used a smokey room & no water at all. Funny, huh? Another really creative trick was using different colored lights for the different subs. The Dallas was reddish, the Red October was blue & Tupolev's boat was green. Fab movie.
If you're on Facebook there's a page called Behind the Scenes that's a fascinating look at how they film various scenes.
"You arrogant ass! You've killed us!" I hope I never have to say those words in real life.

(4,858 posts)...I mean, it's utterly absurd. Richard Burton's hairstyle alone would have gotten him arrested on sight in 1944 Germany. And *why*, exactly, do the two surviving traitors want to go down in the cable car, when they would have been perfectly safe if they had just stayed where they were? And at the last scene at the airport, the German "soldiers" in a burning car are obvious dummies. These are just the highlights. Yet I never tire of watching it--absurd as it is, it's gut-wrenching compelling...
